34. Was in 1984 when Apple came with its Mac.
and it used the image of Orwell's book "1984" of Big Brother talks on a huge screen and all the zombies just follow into a theatre to listen to Big Brother. The whole sequence was in black and white and pretty depressing. Until a hammer thrower woman, in colored athletic outfit, comes thru and throws the hammer at the screen.

It was a symbol of Apple rebelling against "big brother" - IBM.

It was shown only once, at the 1984 ball game and, in fact, was thinking of withdrawing that ad but it has been shown thousands of times since then, for free, as an unusual ad.

Obama, or whoever, took that ad and replaced "Big Brother's" face with Clinton's on the screen, and added some of her campaign talk.

15. The Obama camp denies having anything to do with it, which I believe
because there's no point in including their web address and then denying it. But I don't think it's a psy-op by the Rethugs, either, because they want Hillary to win the nomination on the grounds that she's the easiest for them to beat. I think it's the work of a dedicated Obama supporter who should have included a disclaimer saying that it is not an official Obama campaign ad.

the talking head fascination with this reminds me of Time magazine picking "you" as the person of the year. they are SO fascinated by the idea of viral campaigns that they don't seem to realize that it is the fact that they are giving it so much airplay that's making it important. :eyes:

23. I don't think so.
I volunteer for Obama in 2004 and his staff was instructed to take all kinds of abuse from the republicans and never did anything back to them. Never spoke a word back. I finally got mad one day at a guy who came in and was abusing the paid staff, and I told him off. The paid staff was shocked, but did not say anything bad to me either. When he was gone, they cracked up at his face when I gave him the facts, but they never took any action against anyone.

I think this is just someone else who either wants to help/hurt Barack and they are using youtube to do so. By the way, all you Hilary people. There is also one for her attacking Barack at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dycbAsB9-ps&NR Enjoy.

This is sure rovian and stupid.

I may or may not agree with the message, but I do believe that the ad is very powerful, even though it is a rip off. It works just as well for Apple as it does for this. I will say that I do not believe that this is the work of Obama. That would be blatant infringement on some sort of copyright law.

I watched it, but I think they are all silly anyway. I don't know, I just don't like this sort of thing going on this early in the campaign. People need to think before they do stuff like this in a candidate's name.

Edited to add: I had my son watch it and he said it was a right wing job. He also said it might be a fan of Hilary's had done it, but he did not know. That is my opinion also.

31. Only that it has at the end that it says
the Bears lost and so will Obama and then gives a promo for Hilary. Like I said, I don't like any of them. You will not see me praising any of these attacks because they make me very uneasy.

I respect that you are a Hilary supporter and I will not say anything against her. But have you looked at the threads tonight. There are three of them attacking Barack and the names are recognizable as supporters of other candidates. Some of the posters have a lot of posts but I have not seen them here before this. But you know what, I don't say anything to them because that just adds fuel to the fire and it also gives the right wing some ideas of what works to damage our candidates. I read what they say for a while, take note of some of their names, and then leave the thread. I don't know if you are one of them, because I honestly got tired of looking at them and quit. Anyway, go in peace. Got to listen to my son for a while. Ahh, kids. ;-)

37. I agree with you on that;
The one for Barack is better made and more damaging per se. I tend to get turned off to candidates because of what their supporters are doing, but I am having to take into consideration that they do not necessarily speak for the candidate and that it might also be right wingers pulling the wool over our eyes. I am just trying to take everything into consideration right now. As for who I will vote for, there is only one democratic candidate that I can't in good conscience support, and I am keeping my mouth shut on even that. I have nothing against Hilary, in fact she use to an Illinois girl. ;-)

27. Not tacky--a master stroke
The reason the ad is brilliant is because it slips right into a previously defined concept in the American consciousness: the usurper to the title. What this ad did in its original form is cast Apple as the Microsoft-antithesis. This ad casts Hillary as Microsoft.

Anyone who knows persuasion will tell you that familiarity is key. It costs vast amounts of money to persuade but if one can do something clever like this--in essence, piggybacking on an American classic in advertising--then one has leaped over those millions of dollars required to do the job.

When I say "do the job," I mean position Hillary as the establishment. An ad like this effectively shortcuts a campaign required to position her. It starts virally on the 'Net and will, if Obama's campaign people are savvy, continue in other ways--through the message of his speeches, advertising, etc.

Somebody who is very, very sophisticated in advertising did this. My guess is it's someone of the boomer generation. I don't think it's Obama's staff (maybe someone doing it on his/her off hours) but it's clearly someone who understands the big picture of marketing strategy. It's a master stroke.

On a related note, I noticed something interesting from Obama's campaign this last week. The trouble is that I can't remember exactly what it was. I was surfing advertising sites for a graduate course in advertising that I am teaching this summer. I found a blurb or an ad of some sort for his campaign in one of the advertising trade spots. All I can remember is that it was unusual and interesting and I recall thinking that Obama must have some clever people on his marketing team.

Also, recall that there was a thread here about Obama's logo when it first came out. The thread remarked on how different it was from the usual red-white-blue standard fare in a campaign logo, but my point is that Obama's marketing is accomplishing much in its early stages.

62. IIRC the hammer was aimed at Big Blue not Microsoft
Edited on Tue Mar-20-07 08:38 AM by foo_bar
MS didn't have totalitarian status in '84, as they were still bound to and overshadowed by IBM's hardware, had yet to create a Windows, and didn't have a hardware platform with >97% market share (or even >50% until 1985). Granted IBM wasn't a monopoly either, but they were more or less synonymous with "computer" if not "personal computer" the way Xerox is an abbreviation for a photocopy machine.

65. interesting point but doesn't change the strategy
Yes, now my boomer brain is sifting foggily through to that time and I believe it was IBM. So funny to think that IBM has now given up the PC market.

Regardless, it doesn't change the "glove" strategy that I'm pointing out. There is Big Brother and there is the reaction to Big Brother. Whoever did this is taking advantage of an archetype. From the archetype to the Apple commercial and now to Obama.

Thank you so much for your input. I think I'll make this a class exercise for a discussion on political persuasion. The links really make your point in a colorful way, too.

many more, whether they be from pissed off democrats or pissed on democrats will be appearing. Mark my word, if you all that do not support HRC better get your best shot in this year because she is going to be the democratic nominee for president....And if you say "you will not vote for her", then that is okay too...In-roads are being made by the HRC team to court the other 60% of americans that do not vote and the bulk of them are single women and single moms. So, yes sit your asses out this election and come January 20, 2009 when HRC is sworn in as the 44th President, then you can tell everyone that you voted for her to save face.....

I understand why a misguided minority supports her, despite all her faults. If she is sworn in as #44, I will no longer be a member of the democrat party, for we will have lost our soul, our vision, our future, and our present. we will have become, even more so, slaves to a corporate society serving the ultra rich, which, when Hill got her "contract" for her lame book, she became a full paid and bribed member.

I take issue with supporters of any candidate who take this tone but, oddly, it seems only Hillary supporters are trying to ram the "inevitable" meme down our throats.

I find that alone to be an effective repellant. People don't like to be told the way it's gonna be and if you don't like it tough shit. To think I once believed no one could be more offensive and detrimental to their candidate than the Clarkies. I stand corrected.

Sure it's kind of clever, but it doesn't seem to be the kind of thing that would come out of Obama's campaign itself.

To me it seems to be a lot more anti-Hillary than pro-Obama -- and there are an awful lot of non-Democratic anti-Hillary people, if you know what I mean. All too easy for them to slam Hillary and let folks believe that Obama is acting underhanded this early in the game.

I wouldn't be crowing with glee too fast on this.

I'm really interested in the reactions on this thread. When I saw this on Olbermann, I thought it was the work of Republicans. It makes Obama look bad, and makes Hillary look awful, too. Mind you, I'm NOT a Hillary fan, and I really wish she wouldn't run. But my immediate gut reaction was this was an ad designed to trash Obama by making it look like he was resorting to negative campaigning.

It could be a fan of Obama made this, but my guess is still someone affiliated with the Republicans. Anybody have any info on who did this?
