Recently, Hillary Clinton, Even Bayh and John McHugh (R- NY 23rd) visited Afghanistan. McHugh's interest is that a lot of the troops there are stationed at Fort Drum outside of Watertown, New York. The newscasts indicated that commanders in Afghanistan are asking for more troops. This request got buried in the discussion of the Iraq troop surge and sounded very similar; i.e. "just give us x more soldiers and we'll crush Al-Quadia." An interview in the local paper with McHugh indicated that there is a more serious problem. Afghan fighters have been holed up in the mountains getting ready for a spring offensive. I say Afghan fighters because I don't think it really matters if they call themselves Taliban, Al-Quadia or the Donald Duck brigades; they want foreigners out of their country.
The Russians failed to hold Afghanistan with 100,000 troops.
The US has 24,000 troops in Afghanistan; NATO has another 16,000.
When does the snow melt in Afghanistan?
