A pastor who has been gathering children from various districts in eastern Uganda has been arrested for neglecting and starving them.
Godfrey Kitamirike, 30, the Director of Hope for Needy Children Africa was arrested on Sunday after Mafubira sub-county chairman Richard Gulume called the police to arrest him.
Mr Gulume said he learned of the children's plight after neighbors reported the horrible conditions in which the 96 children aged between 2-12 years were living. Police officers who inspected the premises said the rooms measured approximately 12 by 7 feet, lacked water and proper facilities like toilets.
District Police Commander Chris Barugahare said the pastor had failed to produce documents to prove the authenticity of his organization. He said they suspected the pastor could be involved in child trafficking.

"Right now we can not tell the intentions he had of confining these children here because he has not taken them to school as he told their parents," he said. Mr Kitamirike, however, told Daily Monitor the organization was legally registered in 2001 but started operating in February.
He denied any involvement in human trafficking. The DPC said Mr Kitamirike would be charged with child rights abuse, managing an unlawful organisation and obtaining money by false pretence.
