Marvel Comics really do love the terrorists!
First they kill off Capt. America..Now they plan to open a theme park...In Dubai?

http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=105780

United Arab Emirate-based Al Ahli Group and Marvel Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE: MVL) announced today a partnership that will bring Marvel's full library of Super Heroes -- including Spider-Man, Iron Man, The X-Men, Incredible Hulk, The Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer -- to Dubai for a major new theme park destination being developed by AAG. The development is in line with the vision set by HH Shk. Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, through his innovative entertainment and hospitality driven expansion projects for Dubai and the UAE.

The Al Ahli Group, under the leadership of Chairman Nasser Ali Khammas and driven by the idea and dedication of CEO Mohamed Khammas, is poised to bring the region's first and only global theme park destination directly to the heart of the Emirates. AAG and Marvel are also in initial stages of discussions about additional projects throughout the greater Pan Arabia region.

AAG has been in discussions for more than two years with the owners of the world's top intellectual properties in the entertainment arena and is extremely proud of its new long-term partnership with the world renowned Marvel brand. The Project will open in 2011 with a direct investment of over $1 billion USD. The creative team, which consists of some of the most spectacular creative minds from around the globe, will be based in Hollywood, Orlando and Dubai throughout the four year development process. New technology and unparalleled visitor experiences will be the hallmark of the theme park, creating a new standard for theme parks around the world.

David Maisel, Chairman of Marvel Studios and a member of the Office of the Chief Executive, Marvel Entertainment, said, "We are launching a long term relationship with the Al Ahli Group to bring the Marvel Universe to Dubai with this exciting new theme park development. Al Ahli Group has both an impressive team of theme park, entertainment and hospitality executives and the financial strength to leverage that expertise into a world-class destination resort experience unparalleled in the region. We are very pleased to be a part of this exciting initiative and look forward to a successful partnership with Mohamed

1. I find it funny the only place I'll see Cap now is in a video game
I'm going to be buying the PS3 ver of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance soon. When it first came out Cap was still quite "alive" in the comics. But, bottom line, the writers just felt that his idealism about the American Dream couldn't survive the modern cult of homeland security, so by proxy, they've shot and buried the American ideal of freedom, to make a point and to try and "move on" from outdated concepts. Not light stuff.

10. Spoiler alert: this major marketing and merchandizing icon is not really dead
Wait, am I supposed to bury the spoiler in the body of my post instead of the headline?

2. This is disturbing
as a long time fan and collector. I didn't read the recent "Civil War" series but what I know of it it seemed to be a politically ambitious project. Not sure which end of the spectrum it favored. Sadly the former New York City based comic company from my youth is now just another global monster like everything else. The Spiderman movie alone made Sony about a billion dollars.

7. Well it's been that for a couple of decades now
Civil war was one of those ideas that it doesn't help to think about for too long.

The story of Civil War is simple enough; Speedball and the New Warriors end up fighting Nitro next to a school; Nitro blows up and kills hundreds of kids. The Government thinks that guys who choose to put on a mask and fight crime should be registered and trained so that they know what they are doing. Iron Man supports this position, sort of. Captain America doesn't. The two get groups around them to fight and finally Captain America surrenders.

It's one of the ground rules in comic books that the public and the government just seems to accept unrestrained vigilantism on the part of people wearing capes; this series questioned that. But, from what I gather, they didn't make a very convincing case for the anti-registration heroes.

6. He didn't think it was appropriate to interfere at the time

and later regretted the result that occured without him, and is providing aid and comfort to America's enemies, the super heroes that refuse to register and come under government military command.

Edit: And he had a really good limited series called 'The Oath' that ended recently, and he got the girl at the end too, the 'Night Nurse'. Who's a great match. Check it out. 'The Oath' got an awful lot more out of the old guy than comic readers had much right to expect from well, the last few uh, decades, really. So a pleasant surprise.

8. Here's a good re-dubbing of the first issue of the Civil War
http://mightygodking.livejournal.com/292662.html

Some guy took out all the words in the speech balloons and inserted new ones. It's quite amusing and yet also captures the essence of what the Civil War timeline is about. It's graphics-intensive so it will take a bit to load.

I like how at the end, George W's main concern is how to tie the whole thing into a new push for more tax cuts for the wealthy.
