All nine Seattle City Council members oppose the war in Iraq. But fearing the old criticism that the council sticks its nose in issues the city has no control over, some members initially resisted passing a resolution calling for a troop pullout.
But on the fourth anniversary of the war's start, council President Nick Licata convinced them all that it would be OK to speak their minds about the nation's biggest worry. Unanimously, the council on Monday approved a resolution calling for an end to U.S. military operations in Iraq and an "expedited and orderly" withdrawal of troops.
"Everyone was already against the war," Licata said. "The big hurdle was, 'Should the council formally pass a resolution on it?' "
