Is certified mail ever good news?
I got a pink USPS notice for a certified letter the day after thanksgiving so the slip was picked up today to redeliver.

Luckily it's not restricted delivery.

I dont owe any money (as far as I know). No lawsuit as far as I know. Dont own a home, so no homeowners association fees. Not late on any bills.

There was no sender listed on the pink slip so it's giving me anxiety...

1. Try this:
Maybe someone for whom you did a kindness a long time ago, someone you hardly knew, has passed on and left you a massive amount of money.

Does that help?

3. it has been for me but i knew about it in advance
Edited on Sat Nov-29-08 08:47 PM by pitohui
for instance my mom asked me to watch for a certified mail for a gift check (at that time you could give someone a gift of $10K in a year without paying a gift tax and an older relative wished to do so -- now it's 12K )-- yay, i call that fairly good news!

i'm trying to think of any time when an unknown certified letter was good news, i probably can't off the top, but i'm sure as soon as i log off, i will

very often a certified letter could be someone sending a nice gift (large check or gift card) -- they just want to be sure you get it safely

it's going toward christmas, i'm going to think positive and assume it's a gift, keeping my fingers crossed for you

when you go to pick it up, can you ask for the return address and then refuse to accept it if there is no return address? i thought since anthrax you couldn't send stuff w.out a return address, the info should be out there, shouldn't it!?

good luck, i'm quite optimistic really, i think it's just an error or haste that the letter carrier didn't note down the sender

i was about to send a gift card by certified mail but if it causes this much angst maybe i won't?

wouldn't it be cool if one of your older relatives is trying to get her estate down to size and has sent you a xmas gift of $12K????? :woohoo: i know i've got an imagination but stranger things have happened even to me!

4. It can be, but I know what you mean. Rather like "you have a pm from Skinner"
that ends up being just request for donation. (omg, what did I do NOW?!?!?)

15. Jury Duty in NY
I'm not sure if it varies county-by-county (it probably does), but my wife and I have, in total, been summoned in Chemung, Broome and Schuyler counties, and it has never been by certified mail. YMMV, of course. Now that I've posted this, it will turn out to be jury duty, just to prove me wrong.

22. to make sure you received the notice
at least in Texas. I was told they did this because too many people were saying they never got the notice, so now they make you sign for it.

hence the signature, but don't want the expense of sending it registered.

18. Maybe it's your winnings from that Nigerian lottery!
Could be something simple like a neighbor with a non-conforming lot wants to build a deck.

If he has to get a zoning variance around here, he has to notify all neighbors within a certain radius of the zoning board hearing.

19. A former landlady sent me a certified letter.
On the theory that it was bad news (I broke the lease agreement due to bad finances) I let it return to her.

A few weeks later it came back to me by regular mail. It was a check for $20.00 for shoveling a little bit of snow off the sidewalk.

It means I'm trying to collect money from you. One lady bounced a check and next week I'm heading to the court house to file against her. She should have picked up the letter and called me to work it out. *shrug*

38. If they sent it certified, they want confirmation you got it
Edited on Sun Nov-30-08 11:32 AM by treestar
Doesn't have to be bad - often is something to do with the law, but it could just be someone sending you something and they want to make sure you got it - the only purpose for sending something that way is that it gets signed for, so you know they got it.

I'm a lawyer and so use it for "bad" purposes per the recipient's POV, but I have received it from clients sending documents they thought important enough to make sure it was received. This can apply to mail containing money orders or checks, too. So maybe it's your aunt sending you an early Christmas present and wants to make sure you get it!

39. For me, certified mail is usually a copy of some distant relative's will
And a letter explaining how all of the person's money is going to a trust, and not to me.
