Beloved family pet dies in agony. Is it time to revisit the idea of fur trapping in Alaska?

One minute a family dog named Grizzly was playing in front of the house, the next he was shrieking and thrashing wildly, a trap locked in a death grip around his head, his face distorted by the pressure and pain.

The 4-year-old Rottweiler, pet of Tony and Natalie Lazenby and loved by others in the neighborhood, died a couple of hours later, his throat crushed, the Lazenbys said.

It took four people to get the trap off the dead dog's head.

The Conibear 220 spring-loaded trap that killed the dog Wednesday is now in the hands of authorities. It's designed to kill foxes, beavers and coyotes. Dogs occasionally die in them, too, but typically while on hikes with their owners in wild places, and typically in areas open to trapping.

Now it is important to note that this animal did not die due to a simple accident. This dog died because somebody set a trap specifically to kill it, or another dog just like him. Traps set within city limits are strictly forbidden.

Reading the description of how this beautiful animal suffered before it died will tear at the heart of anybody with even an ounce of humanity. Nothing should have to suffer like this in its final minutes of life.

Which brings me to yet another example of something Alaskan that I find personally repugnant.

2. Fur trapping is horrendous any way you look at it.
In this day and age, we don't need to wear furs for survival. We're no longer living in the Ice Age. With equivalent materials that are even more insulating, there's no excuse, none whatsoever, for killing an animal for fur. I'm not against subsistence hunting for food, or killing livestock for food, as long as it's done quickly and humanely. There's nothing humane about a leghold trap.

I hope they catch the scumbag that set this trap, and shove him into one just like it, to suffer the same fate.

4. K and R And lets take this opportunity to consider
that more than 6 MILLION healthy pet animals die a gruesome death in kill shelters every year in this country.

Please spay and neuter your pets, and help spread the word to others.

6. Someone did something illegal
thats all there is to it. It sucks that someone killed this dog, but we should be pissed at the person who did it, not fur trappers in general. $20 the person who set the trap wasn't even a fur trapper.

Not blame the entire fur trapping industry for one illegally set trap? How DARE you not make a wild knee-jerk condemnation of those who would harm fluffy bunnies!

14. The OP is about the use of traps to kill animals.
The use of these traps is cruel and unnecessary. A pet was killed in the trap and people witnessed the pet's pain. Wild animals caught in the exact same traps suffer the same pain and anguish.

11. sorry, but if you're excusing the use of these traps, you have a problem. You want to shoot and kill
a critter relatively cleanly FINE.

Those traps are torture.

19. So what? The trapper is not around when the animal gets caught in the trap.
Why is the pain and suffering of wild animals of less importance than the pain and suffering of a pet?

How would you like to die in one of those traps?

Those traps are cruel and unnecessary.

So- HOW it is "more likely then (sic) not commited (sic) by a non-fur trapper", and what is it about the exact circumstances in this case that makes it so?

38. Well, they could easily check the trap
and see if it was used previously.

Or, im sure they will find something to finger the person who did this. just don't be surprised if it was just some pissy neighbor.

By to answer your question, do you honestly think a real trapper would put themselves in such a situation? I mean come on, where is the first place you are going to check if something is killed with a trap, a trapper.

I am a bit more open to hunting wild game then many other DU'ers. But prefer killing be done as expeditiously as possible.

It is another form of hunting. Not pleasant to the senses and sensibilities of most. This is why most do not participate in it.

25. There was an article in the most recent Backpacker magazine about
wolf trapping near Denali. Some of it was pretty sick - trapped animals stay in traps for days or weeks before they starve or are shot by the arriving trapper. It described one wolf eating dirt and rocks until she broke all her teeth, and lost 15% of her body weight.

Although this article is about the illegal use of this sort of trap, I'm starting to think that this form of huntng should be banned or limited. It causes a great deal of suffering that could be avoided by choosing other methods...

26. bancrueltraps.com
http://www.bancrueltraps.com/

I find traps like those cruel and dangerous. They aren't just used for fur trapping. They use them for nuisance animals and for predator control.

I've seen two raccoons that died from leg traps. One while it was caught in a trap(although we didn't know it until the trapper showed up) and the other which had freed itself. The one that had freed itself had such a mangled paw and was so sick that the police shot it. We had to call them because neighbors were threatening to beat it to death with a shovel. The other was killed by the trapper. It was the last trap that was set in that area since the trapper had placed it on my son's property.

33. Sorry, hunters, what the fuck is wrong with these people???
I have nothing against hunting for food. I used to be an avid fisherman, something more common in NYC than hunting obviously.

But I don't get "trapping" and I don't get hunting inedible wildlife like coyotes, foxes and beavers. Why can't people just let nature be to the maximum extent in a place like Alaska?

What the fuck is wrong with these people?
