SACRAMENTO - A measure sponsored by Equality California and the National Center for Lesbian Rights will be introduced on the second day of the 2009-20101 legislative session today, supporting the repeal of Proposition 8.
Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) and Assemblymember Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco) will introduce measures that suggest Proposition 8 is an improper revision of the California State Constitution. Proposition 8 was a ballot initiative in the 2008 state election that moved to redefine the term "marriage" as a union between "one man and one woman," terminating the right of marriage to same-sex couples throughout California.
Shortly after its passing earlier this month, many counties stopped issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples ahead of the 30-day grace period that had otherwise been promised.
Proposition 8 has been a controversial ballot initiative since its approval by voters after Election Day. Several investigations are planned for launch that would focus the spotlight on the involvement by religious organizations into the support of Proposition 8.
