Counter Strike: Should India bomb Pak Terror Camps?

As evidence of Pakistan connection to the Mumbai attacks piles up, India is hardening its stance. The Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said that all options are now open, including a military one against Pakistan's terrorist strongholds. Meanwhile, the Pakistan government says it is open to a joint investigation into the attacks.

CNN-IBN debated on Face the Nation if India should target terror camps in Pakistan.

On the panel of experts to try and answer the question were former secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs and former ambassador to UAE and Iran, K C Singh; Senior International Correspondent CNN, Nic Robertson; Pakistani author of A Case of Exploding Mangoes fame, Mohammed Hanif; and Pakistani journalist Naseem Zehra.

At the beginning of the show, 90 per cent of those who voted in said yes, India should target terror camps in Pakistan while a minority 10 per cent disagreed.

K C Singh said that this was not a realistic option for India, but as far as the Government is concerned he said that all options are on the table as of now.

"The time is there for us to exert pressure on other countries, get international public opinion on our side. However, we must remember that Pakistan is a nuclear weapons' state and any attack inside Pakistan is inviting war. The question really is, is that what the Pakistani military wants? Are they trying to disengage from the western side and bring their troops to the eastern side? I think we should put everything in a larger context and not be drawn emotionally into anything the Pakistani army is looking forward to," Singh cautioned.

Faith in India's army shaken by blasts

- Investigations into recent bomb blasts in India have led to the arrest of several Hindus and for the first time ever, a serving officer of the Indian army.

The arrests have triggered heated debate on whether the arrests indicate the existence of "Hindu terrorism". More worryingly, the probes point to the possibility of the hitherto secular and apolitical Indian army being infected by the communal virus.

Six people were killed and over 80 injured in blasts on September 29 in the Muslim-dominated town of Malegaon, about 260 kilometers from Mumbai. A few hours later, a bomb went off near a mosque in Modasa town in Gujarat, where Muslims were offering special Ramadan prayers, killing two people.

Investigations have led to the arrest of about 10 people, including Ajay Rahirkar, Sameer Kulkarni, Rakesh Dhawade (all members of the Hindu extremist organization, the Abhinav Bharat), Dayanand Pandey (a self-styled Hindu "guru") Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur (an "ascetic" who is a member of the Durga Vahini - the women's wing of the Vishva Hindu Parishad - and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad - the students' wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party - BJP).

But even as Indians are heatedly debating whether "Hindu terrorism" exists, another worrying issue has been thrown up by the investigations. Three men arrested in connection with the Malegaon blasts are from the armed forces. They include one serving officer, Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Shrikant Purohit, and two retired officers, Major Ramesh Upadhyay and Colonel Shailesh Raikar.

I don't see how these terror attacks profited the Pakistani government at all, even the ISI.

Let's everybody just drop a bunch of bombs indiscriminately over Pakistan! That'll redeem this sorry situation, just like violence always does! I'll bet John McCain wouldn't mind one more bombing run just for old times' sake.

Pakistan and India have nuclear strike capability, a hot war between these two nations could result in a disaster that would make the 60 hour siege of Bombay seem like a picnic.
