WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - Federal prosecutors added details Tuesday to the corruption indictment against Bernard Kerik, the former New York City police commissioner who withdrew from consideration for Homeland Security secretary when questions arose around his taxes.
The main charges - that Kerik accepted free apartment renovations from a would-be city contractor, lied to the White House and filed false income tax returns - remain. Kerik has pleaded not guilty and is due back in court next month.
The new indictment, which replaces the previous one, says Kerik assisted in the preparation of false tax returns for 2002 and 2005. He had initially been charged with that crime only in connection with his 2000 return.
He is accused of failing to declare some income, taking a false charitable deduction and not declaring the value of a luxury sedan that was part of his pay as a consultant.
The indictment also provides new details under the charge that Kerik lied to the federal government when being interviewed about positions including director of Homeland Security.
