Bush pulls out the Country Bear Jamboree accent whenever
he gets in a real jam.

At the presser, I thought he was a'goin' to put a straw hat on his head and grab a gee-tar.

2. I am a Texan
I'm a Texan and I have a strong Texas accent and though there are plenty of regional dialects in this giant state of mine, none are whatever that is George Bush speaks. I don't know a single Texan who calls "America" "Marka"....not one.
I like accents and dialects. They are the spice of the language, though I do admit to wishing people from Boston were aware there is an "r" in the alphabet. Anyway, Bush speaks like Bush, not like anyone, anywhere.

I, too, am Texan.

And it just bugs the heck out of me when my neighbors and friends out here in California think that the idiot is "talking Texan".

18. Texans elected him governor.
That kinda makes him a spokesman for the state, for good or ill. :)

(Okay, this is Bush we're talking about. It's entirely for ill.)

22. A LOT of Texans did not vote for him.
A lot of us did not vote for him. Bush is also president. Do you take responsibility for that? I think not. <g>

So don't blame all Texans. I think of us as his victims. He screwed our state good and proper too. We were already just about last in funds for mental health. Now we are last. Bush fucked us good and then hand-picked his predecessor...Rick Perry, who makes Bush look liberal and intelligent...and he has no neck.

I am serious about Perry. Supposedly an activist here, overheard Bush at something somewhere...say, about Perry, "If you think I'm dumb, wait until you meet Rick." I swear to god. This person is reputable too. I just can't back the statement. It's funny but no link, no proof.

Jeez, Texans can be so touchy! Next you'll tell me that the result at the Alamo was a tie. :)

If it makes ya feel any better, I'm from Pennsylvania. We sent one president to Washington, and he pretty much let the Civil War happen.

It infuriates me when he claims to be a Texan. He is from Connecticut. His family merely raped our state...oil money and all.

31. plus stealing your state's image and good name ...
Basically, it's cultural appropriation. I suspect that the Bushes, especially Junior, latched onto Texas because it has a powerful symbolic identity. If "east coast preppy" had stronger positive associations, you can bet that Georgie would be distancing himself from Midland/Houston/Crawford at lightning speed. He's an exploiter and an opportunist.

34. It's because of the electoral votes.
That's why junior & Poppy in TX & Jeb in FLA. Smart, really if it hadn't helped them ruin the country. Kevin Phillips commented on this in his book, indicating that the Bushes had not duplicated the mistake of the Rockefellers in basing themselves in low electoral vote states as their powerbase.

45. that too ... good point
Also -- either because he has confused role-playing with authenticity, or because he just doesn't know when to stop, Bush often keeps up the "cowpoke" charade when he's out of the country (even with domestic press coverage, that would seem to be of little electoral advantage). I suppose he finds being a caricature much easier than doing positive things that would widen the world's image of America.

27. at least two actors who portrayed him on TV agree with you ...
Timothy Bottoms and Brent Mendenhall commented in interviews that his speech patterns didn't match the various accents they were familiar with, for Texas or elsewhere in the US. (Mendenhall is from Missouri, and Bottoms is from California but has worked in Texas and has lots of film and theatrical experience -- they've both had professional coaching, too.) I seem to recall that Mendenhall said it was basicallly just mumbling, "with marbles in your mouth".
