"thank god it passed," though that's as much a product of "group think," -a failure to think critically about complex issues and consider a wide array consequences and alternatives drawn from multiple sources- some of which run counter to prevailing sentiments.

Of course, that's also chracteristic of ideologues- but difference is that an ideologue is also immune from evidence and analysis that run contrary to their opinion and larger worldview, before AND after the fact. Republican fundies at the federal agencies who censor or re-write scientific reports from career employees are among the best and most visible (but not the only) examples we can find.

It is being used improperly on DU today, though, to suggest that people who are true to their beliefs are impractical or unrealistic.

today regarding Barack Obama's statement on ideologues. Though I do not have the specific book to quote from the passage, my memory of it is fairly clear. He mentioned two examples: Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter, and made a comment about wondering how anyone could choose to hang around people like them. I do not think that there are a significant number of ideologues on DU.
