The Auto industry got screwed by big oil companies,
but thats another debate.

How many gallon tanks does your car carry.

I've heard that most American cars have up to 13 or 14
gallon tank which if you do the math is nothing compared to
Japanese or European cars.

A 13 gallon tank in a vehicle that does 14-18 miles per gallon
does not go too far does it???

This is one of the major problems with the Auto industry added to
that is the fact that American cars are not well built.

Most cars are recalled based on some kind of malfunction and after
30,000 miles YOU start having MAJOR problems with American cars.

They have to start building quality cars for the American public.

Yes the bailout will help, but they need to build good quality affordable
vehicles that the buying public can be proud of.

Most folks gets mad at how often they have to take their vehicle to the
dealership/garage to get it fix and still can't solve the problem. It
cost money to do repairs on cars and if you have to take your car to
repair shop regularly you end up being fed up and will look for a better
more refined quality vehicle.

Why are the Japanese and European making affordable quality cars that last
as long as you want????

Do you know Ford have quality engine in England that they refused to sell
in America... yes I'm talking about the Cosworth engine, one of the best in
the World.

5. Nonsense. There is no such thing as "Japanese cars"--there are Toyotas, Nissans, Hondas, etc.

Each has an independent quality ranking. Nissan and Subaru, for example, have had questionable quality for years.

3. I was in the market for a car in the spring

If Ford hadn't discontinued the Taurus and if they had forsight to make it a hybrid, I would have bought one. They discontinued their best sedan - what assholes! The Taurus was the best car they had! I bought a Camry in May.

7. Sorry, but my current 1999 Saturn has never been in the shop for anything but regular

maintenance. It will beat almost every model of Honda or Toyota out there on mileage. I have a 12 gallon tank and have consistently gotten 40 MPG traveling on highways between here and Stillwater, OK.

The only vehicle I ever had that was a disappointment was a Mazda 626, that I kept only about 6 months and traded it in on a Chevy.

...in fact i don't think you even bothered to do a Google search on what you "heard". the simple fact remains that the japanese autos are losing the competitive advantage in quality, will be losing the competitive advantage in wages, and as for this ridiculous notion of American autos only having 13 0r 14 gallon tanks, you really need to look up this stuff before you post. My Taurus had a 20 gallon tank. My Thunderbird has an 18 gallon one. Hell my Alero has at least a 15 gallon tank. When you post stuff like this you are not posting from a point of objectivity you are posting from a point of perception. If you were really objective you would know that Toyota had problems with camshafts breaking in the Tundra pickups or that the Camry had sludge problems they were FORCED to acknowledge. Or that Honda Odysseys were eating there own transmissions for lunch. Or that Subaru had all sorts of problems with clutch springs. All that information is out there all you have to do is check. but it doesn't fit in with your world view so you won't. So much for the idea that democrats are more fair.

Sales for US auto manufacturers are down "approximately 30%".

So if US sales are down because their cars are so much worse than the Japanese cars, how do you explain Japanese car sales being down by virtually the exact same amount?

it's not about sales, its about making quality affordable cars.
We all know the economy has not helped auto industry these
past years but producing/manufacturing quality affordable cars
will help the big three immensely.
