'He was a charming man, someone who was only ever nice to me, a great boss to work for.
"He was a charming man, someone who was only ever nice to me, a great boss to work for," Rosa Mitterer, 91, told the Mail "You can say what you like, but he was a good man to us."

Recalling her first direct request from her master, she said she was drying some porcelain cups when he came down the stairs.
'Hello,' he said softly. 'Sorry to trouble you, but could you make me some coffee and bring some gingerbread biscuits to my study?'

'I rose at 6am every day and put on a red-green dirndl with a white apron. My first task was to feed his dogs - he had three German shepherds at the beginning called Wolf, Muck and Blondi.

"I remember so clearly the first day I spoke to him in the kitchen," Mitterer told the Daily Mail. "I said I was Anni's sister and that made him smile, because Anni was his favorite.

'Another time he came into the kitchen, saw me and said, "Ahh, I see our little one has grown a little plumper!".'
Part of her duties involved sorting out the fan letters and presents that were delivered in their thousands to the house.

I only ever knew Hitler as a kindly man who was good to me."

Mitterer's duties included sorting thousands of letters sent to the home, and feeding the dogs. Hitler also ordered Mitterer and her sister to attend church on a regular basis.

1. Well, the Daily Mail had pretty much the same attitude to Hitler in the 30s...
so trust them to dig up someone like that.

4. So Hitler was charming
So's Dubya.

So, they say, was Mao. Pol Pot. Mussolini. Joseph Kony. Etc.

There are plenty of examples of that kind of schizo behavior. It appears to be common among dictators, and it is clearly part of the range of disorders we commonly call "sociopathy".

11. Everyone says that of georgie too.
Psychopaths usually have a charming side, like Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy

I thought it amusing that hitler asked her to go church.

21. We would all do well to remember where that phrase "charming" comes from.
If someone is "charming," it suggests that person has put you "under a spell" and you're not seeing him or her too clearly.

5. Evil is most banal indeed.
I found the account interesting not because it changed anything about the history das Reich or what it did, but because it highlighted the one thine we see over and over and over again ... the most despicable actors in history seem frequently to be just nice folks to their friends and associates.

Hitler, it's said, was a folksy sort. Genuinely affectionate toward children, affable in person, an altogether reasonable and cheerful fellow (well, as long as he wasn't losing WWII, anyway). And even when times were worst, he was always solicitous toward the household staff.

Damn shame his hobbies were so toxic.

6. He wasn't so good to many millions of others.
So frankly, I couldn't care less how good he was to those who coddled him.
