Packin' heat at the National Park
Not to start a gun debate, but do people ALWAYS need to be armed?

from ThinkProgress:

Interior Dept. overturns regulation, clearing the way for concealed, loaded firearms into national parks.»

Today, the Department of Interior overturned a Reagan-era regulation, permitting loaded firearms at 388 of 391 national park sites. The decision allows guns in parks in “any states with concealed carry laws, not just those that allow guns in their state parks as originally proposed.” While the Department cited safety concerns as a factor, the National Park Conservation Association notes:

According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, there were 1.65 violent crimes per 100,000 national park visitors in 2006—making national parks some of the safest places in the United States. The new regulation could increase the risk for impulse shootings of wildlife, and risk the safety of visitors and rangers. Despite the potential affect on national park wildlife and resources, the Administration did not conduct an environmental review as required by law.

The text of the rule notes that earlier, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) wrote to the Interior Dept. supporting the rule change. Check out ThinkProgress’s updated report on Bush’s 11th hour regulations and rule changes.

1. "Packin' heat" ?
Is that from a Jimmy Cagney movie or a Brady Campaign press release?

10. How 'bout "Skin that smoke wagon" from the movie Tombstone?
Like most gun laws, don't think this one will make much of a difference one way or the other. At least people will have the choice to carry concealed if they want.

3. Some of the thoughts on this site are soooo contradictory
We're looking into the entry of a depression. YOU, ALL OF YOU are going to need a gun. To hunt, for protection. Believe me it's easier to shoot rats with a small cal than trapping them.

The biggest cause of death in an emergency is the failure of people to recognize the emergency at all.

My motto is, in the news clips, the unarmed guy is the one that is reported dead.

The wingers are going to arm up and they are coming for your shit ... rapture or not.

4. I understand that there is also legislation to call for open bars to be placed every 500'
along the nature trails.

I'll feel so much safer to know that just about anyone could be packing when I take my Grandson to the park.

:sarcasm:

12. Where there's a possibility of getting raped or killed
Yes, it's useful to have a firearm. National Parks aren't safe havens, you know. They're just another place where people gather.

13. Yeah, no shit. Take it from a Park Ranger's daughter.

There has ALWAYS been tons of crime in the National Parks. My dad carried a gun (including off-duty) and wore a bulletproof vest during his whole professional life.

Gun-running, drug-running, lone whacko killer types looking for women hiking alone...National Parks have never been by definition safer than any other isolated, unlit, remote, witness-free area. (take it from a kid who grew up in one - I feel safer in crowded cities ANY night!)
