RFK Jr. Says Caroline Kennedy is "Interested" in Senate Seat
A rumor no more...

Sounds like Bobby's down with the idea of Caroline replacing Hillary in the U.S. Senate:

Ms. Kennedy goes to Washington. Superb! :)

2. I think she'd do great
While my first choice for that senate seat was naturally Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Caroline fills the bill quite nicely.:)

3. Perhaps Robert K. will get tapped for something else.......
I wouldn't be surprised.

That's what I love about a Democratic Administration after 8 years of GOP turts! Losta positions to fill, and all are more important than we previously thought, as we learned the hard way under the Bush Reign of Terror.

11. Best case scenario is he's already been offered EPA.
It is a possibility, isn't it?

21. Maybe not
RFK Jr. reportedly said this week that he most likely would not accept the EPA post if offered.

Looks like he took himself out of the running for that gig, too, unfortunately.

25. Y'know, maybe I've had the Bobster wrong all this time.
Maybe he really is a humble guy who's happy just doing what he already does.

Bobby the Zenmaster. Who'd a thunk it?

it'll be a shame if she goes into politics.

5. Watch freepers lose their shit
over the old Kennedy Dynasty bugaboo. Nevermind 1 Senator, 1 Congressman, 2 Ambassadors, 1 CIA Director, 2 Governors, and 2 Presidents from Team Bush, it's the Kennedys who aspire to political royalty.

15. I am not a huge fan of the idea either
I suppose he has to appoint somebody rich and famous for the spot. We wouldn't want ordinary people, or even some unknown economics professor, to become part of the government of the people.

16. I rather not see a celebrity appointment myself
But that's not what I was talking about. I've heard wingers and the media make much of the Kennedy Dynasty all my life. But a Bush has been on the Republican presidential ticket every election from 1980-2004, save 1996, and everyone feigns not to notice.

6. Why DID Bobby Jr. take himself out of consideration?
A lot of us assumed the creation of a Senate vacancy was half the reason he backed HRC in the first place. This isn't said as a diss(I'd actually like to have seen Bobby Jr. get appointed), but a person can legitimately wonder why he decided to sit it out.

Is Caroline actually a New York State resident? I thought she lived in Boston.

7. Caroline is a longtime NYS resident
Edited on Sat Dec-06-08 02:47 AM by RFKin2008
Although she has kept a lower profile than Bobby Jr. over the years in regards to her public service works. By that standard,RFK Jr. actually has more name recognition with New Yorkers, mainly due to his efforts to preserve the Hudson River.

You asked why Bobby withdrew his name for consideration. Good question, as he HAS expressed an explicit desire to hold his father's old senate seat someday. Now seemed like the perfect time, and many believed this was a motivating factor in his support of Hillary during the primary season. So once that seat finally opened up with her SoS appointment, he seemed the natural 1st choice.

Then came the stunning announcement on Monday that Bobby was no longer interested in the senate seat, saying that he wanted to give more time to his six children instead. This is certainly noble, but not necessarily believable. After all, he had the same six kids before when he publicly stated he wanted to occupy his father's senate seat. It's not like he woke up Monday morning and suddenly realized, "oh! I have six kids! I can't be a senator!"

So this sounded more like a cover story to me, conveniently paving the way for Caroline to be announced as the prime contender just a few days later. That timing ain't accidental, trust me. And who should be the first member of the Kennedy family to break (leak) this news about Caroline today?

Yep, RFK Jr.

It's all a vast left-wing Kennedy conspiracy, you see...

8. I wonder ...
if Bobby (or some of his advisers) are concerned about his re-electability. You know that his drug use and his heroin arrest would be used against him. It wouldn't bother me -- it's obvious that he has cleaned up his life and made a great contribution to the world. But I think that some folks would say marijuana is okay but heroin is too hardcore for a U.S. senator.

10. How long ago were his drug days?
Wasn't that about twenty or twenty-five years ago?

Seems like you could spin it, if you had to, as a natural response to losing his dad at such a young age. And you could also present it as a sign of "character" that he did pull himself together. Remember, his brother David didn't.

17. it's ridiculous to compare Bobby and David
I knew them both- David very well- and the circumstances that surrounded them were different. Not to mention that they were very different people. David, btw, was much brighter than Bobby.

18. It's uniformly agreed that CKS is the smartest of that generation of Kennedys...
I know KKTownsend isn't the sharpest person out there. I saw her in action close up a couple of times, and she's not that bright. But I like her and regret she didn't win the governorship.

26. I only meant that, between the two of them, Bobby was able to survive.
No aspersion on poor David was intended.

I've always felt quite said about what happened with him. Seemed to me like, at some basic level, everybody failed him.

24. I wouldn't discount the kids as a reason.
His second crop of four range in age from "requires constant attention" to "guaranteed to cause trouble." That alone might dissuade either one of them from wanting to move to Washington--unless of course they both decide they want to go.

I don't think so.

If Caroline gets the seat, she can keep it for life.

That she'd finish out HRC's term, then stand down.
