for the last few years. Cost of living increases have been hidden for quite a few years due to companies putting less product in the package yet charging the same..such as sugar. They went to 4 lb. bags but still charge like it's 5 lb. Spaghetti sauce is a smaller jar. I'm sure du'ers can name a lot more products that downsized yet didn't charge less. This is a hit against social security, etc recipients whose checks depend on the cost of living.

1. I don't know about you but most workers I know haven't been getting cost of living increases at all |
|
Anyone routinely getting a cost of living increase even if not enough of one are doing better than many.

2. This action lays directly on the backs of the old |
|
and poor who depend on the cola just to stay even with the increase in medicare costs. Most times it's a wash.

What do you live on?
There are a whole lot of people living on $637 a month.

3. Many of us with pensions from Fortune 100 companies have no COLA at all. Never! |
|
The companies just restructured their "overfunded pensions liabilities" and took all but the absolute minimum that they had to leave in the fund. There was and is no commitment for COLA, regardless of inflation or the COLA.

security. The pension will stay the same if we live to be 200 years old. And without that, income, we'd be royally up the creek without a paddle.

6. Just prior to election, Soc. Sec. announced a 7.8% increase |
|
in montly Soc. Sec. and SS Disability checks, as of Jan. 1. I don't know if SSI was included.
COLA usually is about 3% per year for Soc. Sec.

8. My COLA on SSDI has been slim of late, yet '09 is 5.8%. |
|
That's going to help. And, yeah, one key to smart shopping is unit pricing, unit pricing, unit pricing.
