But I don't think they were really called viruses back then. They usually just erased your floppy disk.

Now my Vic20 was truly virus free, but that was only because I didn't have a modem until I got my C=64.

I suggest trying the lounge or one of the individual topic groups. Better yet, try a website devoted to computing savvy. The responses you will get here will be worse than useless, judging on past form - 50% anecdotal and thus meaningles reports without any context, 10% unhelpful geekery, 20% railing against giving money to Evil Corporations (Microsoft or Apple or possibly both) and 20% sob stories from people who can't afford a new computer and want to complain about/rationalize their 1997 model.

Either one is a satisfactory choice if all you do is e-mail, surf the web, and perform basic media tasks such as watching movies. Linux also does these things well.

Other than that it depends on what you do. Windows, for example, is the best operating system for gamers.

The best operating system is the one that works best for you. My advice is to read up on both and if possible try both. Basically if you don't need an operating system for something other than basic tasks, then it really boils down to personal preference.

Operating system wars are like browser wars. Everyone has an opinion of which one is the best one and every piece of software has flaws.

I use my mac at home most of the time, since it sucks far less time in IT

And a netbook that runs linux (which was a nightmare to get it where I am happy with setup)

But you are right, for word processing, email and other basic tasks, personal choice

Best of all worlds.

Unless you are a real computer "geek" stay away from linux as your main OS for now.

On an Intel Mac you can run Vista, XP, Linux, etc, etc.. with VMWare, all at the same time.

Definitely more stable than 64-bit XP.

Adobe makes 64-bit Photoshop for Windows (no peep at a Mac version yet.)

Macs aren't immune to virii.

Macs use the same hardware.

Heck, there's so much open source in a Mac that you may as well download SUSE or Ubuntu and install that instead; save the thousands of dollars in cost.

In the end, a computer is a tool - not a religion. What do you need a computer for? Answering that would be the first step to take.

Nothing major except little small stuff once in a while that can easily be fixed. Although its slow at booting up, once its running its not slow at all like people try to make it out to be.

I have been using Windows since it first came out, and MS-DOS programs before that. It's been a long time since an operating system crashes on such a regular basis for no good reason.

Yep, you are right. I do a lot of music (recording) and also video production, and I think Vista is the biggest POS ever foisted off on the computer-using public.

I am considering driving up to Redmond and stealing or torching some Beemers or rice rockets. These morons can't even make an O/S that can get out of its own way- they don't deserve the idiotically high salaries they get. And they sure as hell don't need to be on the road. Considering what troubles I have had with Vista, these fuckers should pay me for lost productivity, or live for free at my house to fix Vista every time it crashes.

Talk about pissing in the wind.

My next system will be an older Dell with XP. As much as I don't like XP, with the SP's it's a lot more reliable than Vista.

IMHO, the last really good O/S MS made was Windows 2000 Professional. But M/S doesn't support this product anymore. It's ridiculous, but a lot of computer mfrs. are making their machines O/S specific now.. Try buying an average -priced computer that is not configured to run Vista- and only Vista. Say goodbye to backwards- compatibility.
