I need to move
Edited on Wed Mar-21-07 01:29 AM by Kiouni
I know living in Nebraska makes me susceptible to the whims of the neo-cons but this shit is getting old!

Developments on the 49th day of the first session of the 100th Nebraska Legislature, Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

MARRIAGE: _ Getting married may be tougher than stopping by the courthouse and paying $15. The Judiciary Committee considered a bill (LB696) that would encourage people to take eight hours of marriage education classes from church officials, clergy, marriage counselors or others before getting marriage licenses. The incentive for doing so: Not going to class would force couples to wait 30 days for their marriage licenses and pay $100 instead of $15 for the licenses. The bill is from Sen. Mark Christensen of Imperial, who believes it would help prepare people for marriage.

1. Funny! But then again, if it had no religious overtones, it might not be so bad.
I used to live in Colorado where things are also insane. But people were always getting married at 19 and beating each other up. Maybe a class before marriage that had information on what to do in the case of domestic abuse, and the penalties for doing it might not be so bad.

2. You know what, I see where this guy is coming from.
He's thinking just slowing people down a little and making them ask a few questions rather than getting all hopped up on hormones might lead to fewer families where kids are shuffled one parent to the other or single parent homes.

The single parents in this country are doing an overall magnificent job under incredibly difficult circumstances, but very few people get married with the intention of ending up in that situation. IMHO anything that can help people avoid that is a good thing. Whether this is it or not is open to debate of course -- and it would depend upon the quality of the premarriage counseling.

3. slowing down marriage decisions might be a good thing, but...
Requiring people to consult "clergy" is clearly unconstitutional, at least to this non-lawyer's brain.

6. I agree with you but....
they aren't requiring consulting clergy as the only option.

"church officials, clergy, marriage counselors or others"

The last two options are secular so I think it could be a good thing.

5. Wow. Seems to me this would only serve to make fewer people choose to get married.
WTH stirred up that pot of muck? Are there a lot of divorces there or what?

7. no more then normal
Nebraska also does not have common-law marriage. I'm getting married next year, so the thought of having to go to a state appointed minister just pisses me off.

8. Come out to California, then. We'll marry you up, no problemo!
Better yet, do it in Tahoe, on the Nevada side, where you can almost drop in and get married. It's so beautiful there. Of course, if you want to do the whole big wedding + reception, do all that near your friends and family, ceremony and all. Just first do the legal thing here where they don't put you thru a buncha red tape. I'm just blabbing, but I wanted to give you an option you maybe hadn't thought of. Good luck & best wishes to you and your intended.

10. Another reason I don't live in Nebraska anymore.
Although, Texas has some pretty big nutjobs too.

But the weather is better (mostly).
