Should Obama fire the US attorney who won't quit at the change of administrations?
US Attorneys customarily resign following a change in administration, but Mary Beth Buchanan is refusing to quit. If he did fire her, would it be the same as Bush/Gonzalas firing other attorneys for political reasons?

She sounds like a real piece of work.

3. Fire her ass!
She is doing this to further her political career.
It's a lose -lose situation so fire her. There is no more fall out from firing her than from keeping her. She is a RW nutcase.

4. fire her - she sounds like a real pain in the ass.
Let her make a stink. If she's actively pursued Democrats during her tenure, they can always say that she was doing political dirty work for Bush/Rove et al.

7. At the very least fire her
I would also think about charges of malfeasence and abuse of office for some of her persecutions.

8. Yes.
All he has to do is say, "Unfortunately, the previous administration politicized the Justice Department and appointed US Attorneys for purely ideological reasons. Therefore, I believe the only way we can truly free this country from the currently tainted system is by cleaning house and appointing new attorneys based on their qualifications, not their politics."

12. Yep, fire her ass. No explanation needed. I think people are tired of
this kind of bullying from the right anyway. She is overplaying her hand if she wants to make a martyr of herself.

13. It would not be the same
Loyal Bushies and Bush sycophants would argue that it is, but we've got the goods on Ms. Buchanan. She's in the attorney firing scandal up to her eyeballs.

That's grounds for dismissal enough.

14. Keith O made a great point, that the only reason she is clinging to her position
instead of following the long traditional protocol of resigning is so that the Republicans can say, "See?!?!?! The Democrats fire people on political grounds too?!?!?!!?"

He also pointed out that she hired that blond Monica chick who was subpoened in front of Congress during the hearings regarding the firings at the Justic Dept.

She isn't making this decision independently, I'd almost guarantee it.

17. Keep her. Make her a special project.
Show the world her partisan malpractice. And I'm sure with some careful scrutiny, since she's a uber-fascist, I'm sure she's dirty as well, which means her hidden dealings may reveal something jailworthy.

Firing her (as Olbermann pointed out) absolves the Bush Prosecutor Purges, correctly or not.

21. It is precedent to leave when a new administration takes office
KO is wrong on this one - resigning is precedent and those attorneys were fired during the administration for political reasons. This firing is not for political reasons. Adios!

18. This has absolutely no parallel to the Bush/Gonzalas firing situation.
The issue there wasn't that the attorneys were fired -- they are political appointees, and serve at the pleasure of the president. The issue was that they were fired because the Bush administration wanted them to prosecute fake voter fraud causes. The issue is the political interference with the administration of justice, not firing by itself.

19. I wonder how President Obama will feel about her justice?
"Buchanan “has been criticized because her office has brought a number of high-profile cases against Democrats during her tenure, but rarely targeted members of her own party.” And now Buchanan wants to volunteer her services to President-elect Obama."http://thinkprogress.org/2008/12/05/mary-beth-buchanan-job/

22. Bush has even asked her to resign:
The White House has a message for its political appointees: Go home.

White House chief of Staff Joshua Bolten sent a memo Dec. 1 to all of President Bush's political appointees asking them to tender their resignation effective Jan. 20 -- the day President-Elect Barack Obama is sworn into office.

"To provide the President-elect maximum flexibility in assembling his Administration, and consistent with past practice, President Bush is requesting letters of resignation from all non-career appointees except Inspectors General and those individuals that hold termed positions," Bolten writes.
