WTF is wrong with our lawmakers? First it's the taxpayer bailouts and now it's this new idiotic seatbelt law they're quietly sneaking through. I mean, how many jobs do they really think will be created because of this?

I'll be dammed if I'm gonna buckle up whenever I go for a bike ride or if I'm out fishing in my boat next summer. It's the stupidest thing I ever heard of.

Jesus H Christ what will the corporate greedbags think of next?

3. Seatbelts in a boat? That's flat out dangerous.
You have to be able to move around on short notice. We use jacklines attached to our life jackets when it is rough and we need to leave the cockpit, but a seatbelt would be hazardous.

I don't understand why they don't have seatbelts on school buses, though. That seems really stupid.

The cops don't have time to write up bike riders for not wearing seat belts.

If they want to accomplish something positive raise cell phone use while driving to an offense on the same level as DUI. Put people in jail for it.

28. i disagree mtnsnake
i think mandatory safety belts for boats, motorcycles, and bicycles is a good idea.

i also advocate for safety belts on most playground equipment, on "scooters" (both manual and electric), on those flattened-out-escalator-moving-floor thingies in large airports, on bar stools - perhaps most particularly on bar stools - on bunk beds, and um, on couches in areas prone to earthquakes.

let's buckle-up for safety! :-)

Okay, I can understand seatbelts on couches in earthquake prone zones, but I am not going to buckle up in my bunk bed. No way no how.

We'll just have to agree to disagreee on that one, shugah :)

34. Seatbelts on bikes and boats will hurt more people than save them
Anyone who has been on a bike can attest to how sometimes you have to maneuver in various ways to keep balance... try mountain biking on a trail going downhill with a friggin' seat belt on you. You'd crash.

The same goes for boating... especially sailing. You need to go from one side of the boat to the other in a flash under certain conditions... the same with motor boating. If you have to land at a pier, just whn is it legal to take off the seatbelt to be able to tie down the boat?

41. What the hell does Lieberman know about motorcycles? And you're prolly right...
Again, I've seen amazingly weird shit, lived through an auto accident with a drunk woman that ran a red light that fucked me up & coded me for nearly 3 and a half minutes and I was wearing a seat belt so there's that, but...if 'seatbelt lobbyists', and I believe it to be roughly so; can also be defined as people with hyper-concerns for little of what they understand physically beyond the loss of loved ones by means of i.e. drunk drivers (NO ONE is discounting such loses!!), the sliding of same off motorcycles under gas trucks to be flatten there (NO ONE is discounting such things!!), or assault rifles (NO ONE is advocating such things!!) then yes...'seatbelt lobbyists' will fit through that aperture,

I do I think for some it's a way of feeling good about an issue while *backing* into it without having to even understand it, and you're having mentioned Lieberman wweeeellllll...

For some reason that just pisses me off

I can't imagine anything more dangerous than having a motorcycle tumbling along with you and crashing into you over and over. Even a bicycle. I can envision a kid falling from his bike and ending up in an awkward position with bicycle firmly attached on top of him by a twisted and tight seat belt that would be difficult to release. That would surely be a stupid thing.

49. What a silly post. Would you mind telling is just where such a law is being pushed?
State? Federal? Local?

Of course this is just an absurd post. When a motorcycle or bicycle is involved in an accident it falls down, generally on hard pavement. You would not strap a person to a heavy piece of metal insuring that they were firmly attached to it at the time when they would best be as far from it as possible. You do not want to be on the motorcycle when it falls on the ground, particularly you do not want to be constrained so that you can not get your leg out from the side that will be down.

You can step out of a lot of spills or roll with the fall to soften the impact. But not when you're strapped to the bike. I don't even believe in toe clips. I bet some belt corporation bribed them - though you can bet they'll be manufactured in China.

They should mandate helmets for people taking showers, though. People slip and fall all the time.
