NRA gearing up to fight incoming administration
Gun groups don’t trust president-elect
By Sam Youngman
Posted: 12/08/08 08:08 PM

Gun groups say they are “prepared to fight” the incoming administration on the issues dear to them despite President-elect Obama’s insistence that lawful gun owners “have nothing to fear” from him.

Obama, appearing on at a Sunday press conference, said he believes “in common-sense gun safety laws, and I believe in the Second Amendment.”

But Chris W. Cox, executive director of the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) political arm, said membership in his organization is growing at record levels, and a number of reports show that gun sales are up by as much as 50 percent nationally since Obama won the presidency on Nov. 4.

“He says gun owners shouldn’t be worried, but clearly gun owners are worried,” Cox told The Hill.

Cox said Obama’s record, particularly from his time in the Illinois state Senate, paints a picture of an incoming president that is an enemy to gun owners, and he said the president-elect’s early actions bring that picture into focus.

2. I like to know what the fight for. I got the impression that this was not a priority with Barack
I mean our economy is in the tank and yet these assholes still think it's all about the guns. Probably out there right now trying to scare the bejesus out of gun owners by saying that Obama is going to gather up all the guns, melt them down and create a statue of Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers out of it.

6. As a "gun nut," I can break it down
1. Our 2008 party platform openly supports a new gun ban.
2. Obama's website openly supports a new gun ban.
3. Joe Biden has lobbied for gun bans since God-knows-when, and is considered hostile to the Second Amendment.
4. Rahm Emanuel is Obama's chief of staff. Ditto.

Now, I know that Obama has a lot on his plate to deal with as it is without tackling a new gun ban, but I think gun owners across America are wanting to send an unmistakably clear signal to the incoming President - our first legitimate President in eight years - that a new gun ban will not be tolerated.

10. And don't forget Eric Holder a long time anti-gun politician.

He most recently expressed his views in this http://www.gurapossessky.com/news/parker/documents/BriefforFormerDOJOfficialsasAmiciCuriae.pdf">Brief in support of banning handguns in the name of public safety.

When people with a history of extreme gun control are teamed together and continue to support banning popular guns, then it is only reasonable that gun owners and gun rights activists should be concerned.

8. Obama: “I think people can take me at my word.” and thats what is empowering the NRA and creating

..panic in the gun owning/buying public.

Some of Obama's rhetoric is excellent. He says he supports the 2nd Amendment (almost everyone does), he says he believes the 2nd to be an individual right (which is more insightful than the ACLU's position), and he agrees with SCOTUS's Heller decision (which makes him far more insightful than the Brady Campaign and most other gun-control advocates).

But he also says he supports reauthorizing the Assault Weapons Ban and making it permanent. For those who don't know, the scary sounding assault weapons, are merely semi-automatic rifles, shotguns, and pistols with standard magazines. They sound scary, but they are in fact very popular among law-abiding citizens for self-defense, recreational/competitive shooting, and even hunting (when configured correctly).

I hope the current administration sees how their words are motivating potential voters. I realize most of them probably aren't Democrats, but I'm sure there are many. I know because I am one of those gun buying Democrats who is hedging on the future by buying some stuff now.

For those of you who say the NRA is full of shit or that gun owners engaging in panic buying are stupid, do you think Obama is merely joking about the AWB, appeasing the gun-control crowd, or what? Because I don't see how you can "take him at his word" and then criticize the NRA or gun buyers for their reaction to his words.

9. By all means, gun nuts.
Never mind that Obama really doesn't want your damn guns and all you have is some selective evidence of his support of gun control to go on. Keep living in your peaceful, facts-and-logic free bubble.

12. Would you care to explain?
I thought I laid out my case rather nicely.

Talk is cheap. What really matters is what Obama does rather than what he says. Call me cynical, but after eight years of Herr Decider, can you blame me?

15. I believe Obama's said repeatedly he's not going to ban guns.
Gun control is probably last on his list of priorities right now, with the economy the way it is, the war, and everything else--and even if it wasn't, do you HONESTLY think that some secret Obama brownshirt police are going to come to your door and TAKE YER GUNS?

Obama doesn't want your damn gun. Biden doesn't want it either. Nor does Rahm Emanuel.

16. Sheesh-did you read his platform? HE WANTS an "AW" BAN & HE wants it permanent. Why is this so hard
Edited on Tue Dec-09-08 11:48 AM by jmg257
to believe??? All HE has to do is sign it, there are already ban bills in congress, one with 68 supporters.

We KNOW Biden and Obama don't want our guns, they also DON'T want us to have them either. At least not semi autos with scary features.

We certainly believe it...oh, not that some goon squad is going to come and take 'em (what a perfect example of tyranny that would be), but that once a new AWB is passed, you will at the least not be able to buy new semis, or standard cap mags, etc., the elusive "assault weapon" definiton WILL expand, and just maybe owners will have to pay to register those already owned. NOT good.

Last time we had an anti-semi auto Pres, a like-minded congress, and an anti-gun, "collective right 2nd amendment" AG, we lost the right to buy them for 10 years at least - next time will be even worse. So although we HOPE it never happens again, we figure it just might, and we buy 'em while we can.

"Obama and Biden would...They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons BAN permanent."

17. Yeah I'm gonna go ahead and say with almost absolute certainty
that you don't need to worry about it.

Gun control is not a priority of Obama's administration--fixing Dubya's mess is, and once it's cleaned up he'll finally get to implement the major parts of his own agenda. I don't think, if they manage to earn the goodwill of the American public, that they'll try to ram through the Assault Weapons Ban.

18. I hope you are right - obviously. But I won't count on it. It IS important to quite a few law
makers and plenty of those with influence to make it happen.

"Rush out and buy them NOW"? Not really. Pay attention to see it getting closer to happening? Oh yeah!
