Woman critically injured in sword attack

Woman critically injured in sword attack

By Erin Alberty

The Salt Lake Tribune

Salt Lake Tribune
Updated: 12/10/2008 11:06:14 AM MST

A Salt Lake City man attacked a woman with a sword, inflicting critical head injuries, after she allowed him into her home to spend the Christmas season with their children, police said.

The woman did not feel threatened by the man initially, even as he was sharpening his katana sword Monday in her kitchen near 1100 South and 900 West, police said.

But then he took the sword into the living room and struck her, cutting her face and the top of her head, according to police. He also hit her with the broad side of the sword, bending it badly. Witnesses intervened, and the man fled.

The woman was hospitalized in serious to critical condition, according to police. The man was arrested in a park near Indiana Avenue.

8. Everyone knows that this is a result of our countries obsession with swords
and our general promotion of an unsafe, macho sword culture. No I don't blame him. It was the swords fault. And all those who think that swords are acceptable in this day and age. We need to outright ban them and do away with anything glorifying swords; like museums, movies, television shows, those tacky sword shaped toothpicks you sometimes get at bars, a great many Halloween costumes, a large percentage of our history classes, any religious texts that mention these vile weapons, and so on.

Oh yeah, insert something about compensating for small genitalia.

15. Dang I forgot one
Swords need to be singled out for special laws and regulations because they exist only to kill, they serve no other function. So while the deaths they cause are trivial in number compared to things like cars, swimming pools, and golfing we should be exceptionally outraged over deaths involving swords because they're *evil*.

People wouldn't go for a ban outright, maybe we just ban military style swords first, then work our way down to wooden swords, hobbyist swords (fencing for instance) and fake swords (light-sabre replicas need to go dammit!).

I don't think a "real" sword would be bent if you struck somebody with the flat.

There was a sword attack in South Dakota a couple years ago.

21. Very strange - I wonder if there's some sort of privacy issue that the writer
is skirting around, but I can't imagine what it would be.

Very sad for the woman, and especially the kids. This is wild speculation, but it sounds like she tried to do a kind (if misguided) act and was paid back with violence...

If that the concern is that by identifying the parents, they would be identifying the children? Usually, this isn't a concern unless the child is the victim of the crime. But in Salt Lake, who knows?

31. For some odd reason this OP reminds me of the opening passage from Snow Crash
The Deliverator belongs to an elite order, a hallowed sub-category. He's got esprit up to here. Right now he is preparing to carry out his third mission of the night. His uniform is black as activated charcoal, filtering the very light out of the air. A bullet will bounce off its arachno-fiber weave like a wren hitting a patio door, but excess perspiration wafts through it like a breeze through a freshly napalmed forest. Where his body has bony extremities, the suit has sintered armorgel: feels like gritty jello, protects like a stack of telephone books.

When they gave him the job, they gave him a gun. The Deliverator never deals in cash, but someone might come after him anyway–might want his car, or his cargo. The gun is a tiny, aero-styled, lightweight, the kind of a gun a fashion designer would carry; it fires teensy darts that fly at five times the velocity of an SR-71 spy plane, and when you get done using it, you have to plug it in to the cigarette lighter, because it runs on electricity.

The Deliverator never pulled that gun in anger, or in fear. He pulled it once in Gila Highlands. Some punks in Gila Highlands, a fancy Burbclave, wanted themselves a delivery, and they didn't want to pay for it. Thought they would impress the Deliverator with a baseball bat. The Deliverator took out his gun, centered its laser doo-hickey on that poised Louisville Slugger, fired it. The recoil was immense, as though the weapon had blown up in his hand. The middle third of the baseball bat turned into a column of burning sawdust accelerating in all directions like a bursting star. Punk ended up holding this bat handle with milky smoke pouring out the end. Stupid look on his face. Didn't get nothing but trouble from the Deliverator.

Since then the Deliverator has kept the gun in the glove compartment and relied, instead, on a matched set of samurai swords, which have always been his weapon of choice anyhow. The punks in Gila Highlands weren't afraid of the gun, so the Deliverator was forced to use it. But swords need no demonstration.

34. Neal Stephenson is the master of the first chapter
Other authors may not know how to get started, but he leaps right in there with a bang. I frequently re-read just the first part of The Diamond Age, as well as Snow Crash - in fact, I think I'll do that right now... :)

45. Most of the time, if a book doesn't grab me in the first page I'm probably not gonna like it much..
A good writer knows that first page is the most important one as far as hooking the reader and puts a lot of effort into it.

Stephenson is one of the few writers that force me to look up words, I like that.. I could reasonably guess the meaning of propaedeutic, but enchiridion left me scratching my head and reaching for the dictionary.
