My opinion about the bailout is hardly strong, being slightly in favor given the scope of the auto industry in the American economy. What annoys me are the numerous conservative whiners who oppose the bailout as a violation of free market principles and because someone would be appointed to oversee use of bailout funds by the car makers. I find their opposition particularly trite because many of the same conservatives do not blink an eye when it comes to the contracting out of government functions, especially military, to private enterprises. Businesses have relied more on having the government as a business partner, particularly in the last eight years; the bailout would extend this to the auto industry. But at least GMC et al will still be selling stuff on the open market, whereas the Blackwaters and Halliburtons skirt around the market to win "no-bid" contracts.
