{OH} Sheriff: Eviction Heartless During Winter, Recession
HAMILTON, Ohio -- An area sheriff has ordered deputies to ignore eviction orders when people have nowhere else to live.

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said evictions in winter weather and during an economic recession are heartless and those cases should be sent back to the courts and resolved some other way.

Jones on Tuesday ordered deputies to ensure that people have shelter before they're forced out of their homes.

“It doesn’t cost much for me to be compassionate, and I’m not going to cause somebody to die because I wasn’t compassionate,” Jones said.

He also sent a letter to Gov. Ted Strickland asking him to issue a state order to stop forced evictions for at least the winter months.

1. Thank you Sheriff Jones
I know he's a real bastard when it comes to hispanics, but I like this.

7. Oh, I hope this is a trend.
Thanks, Sheriff Jones! It's so nice in this depressing mess, to see someone who can make a difference, acting like a human being. I hope he doesn't get grief for it, from those above him.

(Thanks, OP too!)

8. Got a semi-similar situation here in PossumWaller, Virginia...
The landlord of the property where my mother lives sent a registered letter early in November to all occupants stating that, due to the increase in their "expenses" related to the property, the rent on her apartment is going up 33%, effective January 1. January 1. Dead of winter. 33%.

Punchline 1: Their "expenses" must be the fact that they hire someone to mow the lawn occasionally. They sure haven't spent any money on maintenance of the property -- the building is falling apart.

Punchline 2: The place has been on the market for a year. They've already lowered the price once, and they told my mother that the realtors told them that it wouldn't sell unless they raised the rents (?). They didn't figure that it doesn't reflect all that well on the property either that 2 out of the 4 tenants have already moved out, saying in no uncertain terms that the place isn't worth what they're asking -- and my mother and the tenant next door to her are looking.

Punchline 3: The landlord is a church.
