This is an awesome story! Anysoldier.com is a website you can go to to send packages to soldiers in Iraq. My wife heard about it on a message board she reads on.
http://www.anysoldier.com/Since the wife and I are retired and have been fortunate in life, she decided this was our way of supporting the troops. She went to the list and picked out a female soldier named Carol, which is my wife's name, and e-mailed her to see what they might need. The e-mail she received back was from a gal named Carol from Georgia, 55 yrs old, who was serving in Iraq. She said she represented six soldiers, and they really needed art supplies for something to do.
So, the wife goes out and buys $200 worth of glass beads, charcoal pens, sketch pads, wire, and a lot of other art supplies. I went to the post office and picked up a special pack they have for shipping to our soldiers in Iraq. It has the boxes, labels, a roll of "Priority MAil" tape and all the customs forms you will need to gert it there. You only pay shipping to the east or west coast where they put in on a military transport. We mailed the package last Wednesday.
They tell you not to expect a reply, so we were satisfied that we had helped someon over there.
Last night, at 1:30 in the morning here in Texas, we received this e-mail from Iraq-
"Carol, we received your wonderful package of art supplies. It was almost better than Christmas. We dove into it with every one talking at the same time as to what type of project was going to be made. I have one young man who is a sketch artist, so he immediately wanted the char-Cole pencils and a pad. One young soldier immediately grabbed up a roll of wire, and started making a scorpion. And I had promised another female solder that if I received some glass beads that I would share with her, so she was so excited over the large amount of beads you sent, that she immediately started sorting them into the wonderful small containers you sent. Carol you can not imagine how much that gift lifted our hearts. You are the true hero of this dreadful War. I don't know how you feel about the War, but I defiantly know how you feel about the American Soldiers. For you to give to people you have never met, spending your hard earned money. I am overwhelmed. We had just lost a a Soldier a few days earlier, so our hearts are filled with sadness. Your package gave us such a lift, you can not imagine. I have enclosed a photo taken a few days ago of my self. I am a 55 year young women from Alabama. I have been in the army reserves for 25 years, and this is my first deployment. You are obviously a beautiful women inside and out as we can see from you photo. What kind of work do you do? Do you have any children? Have you always lived in Texas? I would love to know more about someone who is as generously beautiful as yourself. Please write back if you can. Again Carol Thank you so much for your gifts, we will certainly put everything you have sent to good use. Is there anything on this side of the world we could get for you?"
Can you believe that? She called my wife the true hero of the war! Here this 55 yr old woman, who is serving in Iraq thinks we are heroes!(she sent a picture of herself in full combat uniform holding her assault rifle in front of a Humvee)
Geez guys, I teared up when I read the e-mail. I hope you all go to anysoldier.com and do this.
