It's probably one of the few that still has US made products. I went this week and bought some seasonal holiday towels, Christmas cards and maybe one or two other things and it came out to less than fifteen dollars. Good value if you want to spritz up the house for the holidays.

1. We don't have a K-Mart anymore.

Wal-Mart and K-Mart opened near Southern Pines/Pinehurst at the same time. Southern Pines had limitations on plowing down all the trees. Wal-Mart refused to comply and opened just across the city line. K-Mart complied (much nicer looking store) and opened in So. Pines.

People flooded Wal-Mart. The nice K-Mart supercenter was ignored. They closed it. Wal-Mart is swamped.

I find things at K-mart that are very adequate and reasonably priced. And, they're usually made in America.

I like the combination. They're not big towels, but just enough to do the job.

One caveat on the towels. Unfortunately, they're not made in the US.

I try to avoid the huge mega-corp stores. I would rather pay a little more and buy from the folks that are busting their humps 16 hours or more a day and barely scraping by.

Pretty soon there will only be the big assed ones left. As I biked over to the trolley station this morning on the way to work, I saw a huge mega-pharmacy prepping to wage war on the locals by putting up their "prices slashed" signs in the windows.

11. I applaud them for bringing back layaway. The K-Mart I grew up with recently shut its doors

and it broke my heart.

I'm a Target fan, but won't walk into Wal-Mart; but I still have a place in my heart for K-Mart and hope it survives. This season, I hope to do my part for the cause.

14. Next time I go shopping, I may try K-mart IF I can get service

Last time I was in the one left in my town, I needed to ask for help. Although there were a few K-mart employees wandering around the store, I could not get a single one to respond to my requests for help. I went to the front of the store, thinking that a checkout clerk could call for help - not a single checkout was manned! After 30 minutes in the store trying to get help to make a purchase I gave up.

I don't expect discount stores to give lots of service, but when they have items locked in cases, they need to have a clerk available to open the case and get the merchandise out for customers.

In addition to that frustration, our local K-mart regularly blocks aisles completely with pallets of still boxed goods turning the store into a giant maze. This makes it hard to get through and hard to find things, especially if the thing you want is in an aisle that is blocked on both ends.

It is no wonder that K-mart has an empty parking lot and no customers!

15. I shop at K-Mart a lot. They are located in the city limits.

I buy most of my HBA stuff there, Fruit of the Loom underwear, nylons, vacuum cleaner filters (they are at least $10 cheaper than Target), batteries, towels, and, recently, an artificial Christmas tree they had on sale.

I like shopping there and go there a lot for that type of thing. It's also a great place to buy name brand small appliances.

But they do a pretty good job of circulating the stuff.

Like the FW Woolworths where I grew up. They had the best chocolate malts and the biggest candy isle I ever saw.
KMart would be a nice change from boring WalMart..

24. A few years ago when Kmart got into financial trouble

and started closing stores locals wrote letters to their corporate HQ. Kmart was the only option locally other the WalMart. They kept it open and I haven't stepped foot in a WalMart in eight years.

25. I remember Kmart doing a good job in displaying toys made in the US

when all those Chinese products were found to be tainted with something dangerous.

I seem to remember that they also displayed European made toys, which meet even stiffer safety standards than ours do.

Kmart seems to care about safety and about US jobs. Because of that, I do drive out of my way to shop there sometimes.

We would be a lot better off if we were a layaway nation, rather than a credit nation. It really keeps you on board earning and paying for what you want. I used to use layaway a lot, when I first started working, but then it seemed to kind of vanish and they all wanted you to get their in-house credit cards.

I've thought for a long time we needed to return to layaway, and good for KMart for promoting it so people don't feel stupid asking for it.

But I have been looking at their merchandise lately, and certainly they carry a good amount of made in the USA merchandise. And, I just happened to notice that they are reasonably priced. Since we have an economy issue, a tight budget issue and a pro-American solution, it was an option to Wally World.

I liked what I saw there. K-Mart may look shoddier than Evil*Mart, with fewer employees and less selection, but it's more authentic. And they still stock big men's clothes of good quality and style, which is more than Evil*Mart does.
