Today I watched the debate on the Senate floor, and even though I oppose the rescue of the Big Three as it is structured now, I was appalled by the speeches given by Republicans who talked about the role of the UAW in this crisis. That was completely disingenuous of them to attack the workers. I was naive in that I thought some of the arguments in opposition would focus more on the parameters in the current bill and the wasteful decisions that have been made by top management over the past two decades.
Many of you said that the Republicans had this on their agenda. Well, you were right. They drew their blades against the least culpable in this mess: the American auto worker, the union men and women. Disgraceful.
The only statement I heard that I agreed with was by one Senator who said: "I'm not in favor of doing nothing." He was in favor of helping, but just in some alternative way that will truly ensure the thriving and survival of our auto manufacturing base.
Scapegoating the workers or the union is just a despicable tactic and I think it will backfire big time on these assholes who put forth this argument.
Having said that, to be honest I am shocked that the Senate didn't pass this bill. I thought for sure that in spite of the bloviating by Repukes, it would be a slam dunk.
