Biggest full moon of the year tonight - don't miss it, if you can...

It is FREEZING here tonight (western ma) but it was worth it.

Beautiful with rolling clouds and brilliant light.

3. That explains it.
I was wondering why I was feeling so high lately, even in the midst of all the bailout crap. It's the MOOOOON! I'm totally a full moon person. I love the moon.

It is freezing here, too. I just spent some time digging my coat out of storage. Looks like there may be an ice storm in W. WA this weekend.

4. I live in Brooklyn, near the Verazzano Bridge. As I was walking my dog tonight
Edited on Fri Dec-12-08 10:18 PM by BrklynLiberal
just before sunset..I happened to glance up toward the NorthEast. Hovering just above the horizon was this HUGE pale orange globe. It took me a few seconds to realize it was the Moon!! I ran inside to grab my camera. I took two fuzzy pictures because it was so windy that I could not hold the camera steadily. I moved toward a playground to rest my camera on the fence to steady it....and of course....the "battery is exhausted" message came up.

Now that it is totally dark and the Moon has risen, there is this incredibly bright white light high up in the sky. It is streaming thru my kitchen window making it look like someone is focusing a huge flashlight thru my window.

Later on tonight, as it heads more to the West, I will be able to see it from my porch. I will try to get a couple of pics. I hope it is not tooooo cold by then.

It truly is an incredible Moon tonight.

• The Full Cold Moon; or the Full Long Nights Moon - December During this month the winter cold fastens its grip, and nights are at their longest and darkest. It is also sometimes called the Moon before Yule. The term Long Night Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is indeed long, and because the Moon is above the horizon for a long time. The midwinter full Moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite a low Sun.

6. Would love to see it.
Unfortunately, it's only 7:26 Pacific Time and I can't see my neighbor's house due to fog. :sigh:

7. Sadly, the sky here is overcast -- although the ambient light from the moon is making it almost as
bright as a pre-dawn twilight.

If I remember correctly, the reason the moon is so bright is because its orbit has brought it to its closest position in relationship to earth for many decades to come.

I'm loving it, I won't live long enough to see this the next time it happens.

9. Brightest and seemingly largest in 15 years due to orbit
Be sure to check out Jupiter and Venus in the southwest at night
it is a rarer occurrence, also these are brightest in the sky after the moon. That conjunction happens once every I think every 70 years or so. I need to look that up.

Anyway
here is a link on where to look at night.
