I hear the economy is too bad to raise taxes. Not too bad to cut autoworkers & retirees pay though?

7. Whats the advantage of unionized construction companies hiring illegal immigrants?
They would still have to pay their employees the same wages and benefits regardless if they were legal or not.

So the only "advantage" a unionized construction company would have by hiring them would be they could be fined or imprisoned for hiring them.

I must be missing something here?

8. They all had their way they did hire the work for less workers

OK closed that loophole last November so its a little harder to get by with it now. A little town near here, Salina OK, built a new school last year and not too many months ago. six or so, the whole drywall crew except for the foreman were arrested and jailed and found to be here illegally and this was a state job so don't insinuate that it doesn't happen or it can't happen, it does and it did right here. IIRC I read they all have been deported now too. I find it odd that you will try to make it seem as it's OK for the undocumented workers to come here and take our jobs by working cheaply but when the auto workers started being threatened you don't like that. But mind you not too long ago you were on me like ugly on an ape for taking a stand against workers taking my/our construction jobs. Its not much fun seeing your jobs leave no matter what the reasons is is it, Don? And especially when its all illegal as it is in my case. huh

I'll check back with ya in a few hours, gotta go right now

9. I was never on you for a stand against workers taking your construction jobs
Edited on Sat Dec-13-08 12:22 PM by NNN0LHI
Were those examples you cited of unionized companies or were these companies employing scabs to begin with? You never did say. Because that can make all the difference in the world.

I see union representatives around here on construction job sites checking for non-union workers all the time. And when they are found all kinds of hell was raised until it is stopped. It usually is not worth the hassle for the company owners. Does that happen where you live and work?

Do you belong to a union?

4. That's different, they work?
What else is funny is most of my fellow workers (and we are Union) think the UAW should take pay cuts. I think part of it is the MSM likes to make it an issue, they get on the CEOs and the Union. It seems like the 100 VPs, the 100 assistant VPs and the other 100 assistant to the assistant VPs and all the other middle management get a free pass. Whenever they make cuts at our place the front line supervisors are the first to go then they go after the Union. Another one is just jealousy. When the steel industry was in real bad shape everyone was on the USWA even people that depended on us for their living like Union people in other supporting industries. Back in the 70's the oldest employees got 3 weeks vacation a year. On one of our contracts instead of going for 4 or 5 weeks vacation a year we got 2 extra weeks for senior employees each year. These extra weeks were put in what they called a Vacation Savings Plan. The way it worked, you saved those 2 extra weeks vacation for four years, then in the fifth year you got your 3 weeks regular vacation and an extra 10 weeks every five years for a total of 13 weeks. We had to give it up because that is what the MSM hammered on constantly, they had people believing we got a 13 week vacation every year. We gave that up in the late seventies and to this day 30 years later many people still think we get 13 weeks vacation (every) year. Even then only the senior employees with (20 years or more usually) got the 13 weeks (once every 5 years). In fact the most vacation we can obtain now is 5 weeks after 25 years service. That is the same total amount of vacation we had back then but nobody says anything about that, it was just bad PR.

6. Raise taxes on those who have benefited from the past 8 yrs and watch the economy recover.
Heard on 'Politically Direct' that lowering taxes on the rich has always lead to a recession or depression and/or a stock market downturn, while raising taxes on the rich speeds a recovery? Lets give that a try, shall we? Obama needs to rescind the bu$h tax cuts when he takes office and NOT let them expire at the end of 2010.
