In 24 hours, Obama-Biden Transition team’s "Open for Questions" web site generated 10,303 questions
Saturday December 13, 2008

In less than 24 hours, the Obama-Biden Transition team’s "Open for Questions" web site generated 10,303 questions for President-elect Obama and his team. The public’s response was so great that the transition team decided to temporarily close the site to questions while they prepare some answers. So which questions do we want answered first?

Based on votes from over 24,000 people, the three questions people most want answered are:

* "Will you consider legalizing marijuana so that the government can regulate it, tax it, put age limits on it, and create millions of new jobs and create a billion dollar industry right here in the U.S.?" (7,947 votes)

* "What will you do as President to restore the Constitutional protections that have been subverted by the Bush Administration and how will you ensure that our system of checks and balances is renewed?" (6,054 votes)

* "What will you do to establish transparency and safeguards against waste with the rest of the Wall Street bailout money?" (5,982 votes)

Participation in Open for Questions outpaced our expectations, and we're looking forward to rolling it out again next week. We're tremendously excited about the promise of tools like this that offer Americans a level of access that has historically been hard to come by. By voting questions up, users have been able to convey to our team which major issues -- like the auto industry, health care, ethical standards, and others -- are the most important to this community.

Over the next few days, some of the most popular questions selected by the Change.gov community will be answered by the Transition team, and their responses will be posted here on the site.

2. I never would have guessed that pot would be the most popular concern
. . . the other two certainly are important.

I'm a little put off by the response time.

3. I agree, although if you consider the deeper ramifications of the War on Drugs
it's a HUGE problem of civil liberties, economics, corruption, etc. The war on drugs is every bit the failure of prohibition and more: it creates crime, it creates criminals from otherwise law-abiding citizens, it wastes billions of dollars, and allows the government to encroach and confiscate private property.

In short, it needs to go.
