Poll question: Have you ever put a member on ignore?
Just curious if how often the ignore feature is used.

Give any reasons you'd like. i.e. Didn't like their posts. Was a jerk in emails.

4. I never saw the point to "Ignore." It seems to me that if you don't like a particular poster
you just, well, ignore him/her. You just pass on by. If the mere presence of a poster on your screen can ruin your day, then the poster has a hold over you.

Repeat to yourself my mantra: "He/She was not placed on this earth to live up to my expectations." It works nicely.

100. I don't use the ignore feature, I just don't read certain people's posts
As soon as a post looks like a troll, or a small group of people are in a heated debate, it is time to move on to another post.

DU has more posts than a person could read in a day, I don't spend any valuable time on posts whose intent is to aggravate me.

7. Occasionally a poster confuses me with another that they
have had major differences with and falsely accuse me of the same, which is very frustrating. If they won't take you at your word that they have confused you, and further, they won't go do a search to confirm their mistake, there are not many options left, at least temporarily. The bigger DU gets, the more this will become a problem..

There are people with whom I've had serious debates and sometimes acrimonious dialogue, but I'd like to think we could keep talking. But when people don't reply I don't know if I'm on ignore or they just don't have anything to say.

I tend to respond without paying attention to who I'm responding to at first. Every time I would get in a debate with this one poster she would end up going batshit crazy. 30. Considered nearly everyone on the "guns" forum. Nearly all of them are violent, foaming, nut-jobs.
Many of these pro-gun Democrats* have thousands of posts, continuously repeat the same fact-free blather, have almost no posts on any other forum, are I suspect not quite who they pretend to be, and IMO their opinions on a progressive view of US gun ownership are irrelevant anyway.

I haven't, though. It's too much fun watching them play their tedious little games, and continuously get trounced on the facts by the posters who are pro-sensible gun regulation.

*Quotation marks would normally go around this word, however it hurts the poor widdle gun lover's feelings, and has been deemed a deletable offense since they snivel and pout so much about it.

I didn't for a long time. I let them make me want to shoot myself. There are one or two people here who have actually made it their business to find my posts and start arguments over really lame shit. One has been on ignore for a total of 3 years - That person came off of ignore for a "grace period" and they went goof-ball on me again. Back on Ignore for them.

I keep my sanity much better when some of these people are just blocked from my DU experience.

35. I voted "2-5" but checking I see I actually have six on various versions of *ignore*.
One, a worthless POS liar, has been tomb-stoned since toward the end of the primaries, so I guess I can take her useless ass off *ignore* now.

The others, three of them I just ignore their threads, not their replies or PM's, and two others sent me angry, weirdo PM's then blocked me replying to them, so I did the same in return.

I have never had anybody on the full-bore *ignore* with all three boxes checked.

42. I have about 135 on ignore and it's the greatest thing since the "mute" button.
For me, life is too short to deal with people who believe that they know all there is to be known and cannot deal with opinions contrary to their own or even admit that someone else has a point. I generally just read through the latest posts without initially paying attention to the names of the posters. If I notice, there are a couple of forums that I will not read at all.

I consider "ignore" like being on the no-call list on my phone or "junk" on my email--a useful tool of my own choosing that makes life online easier for me. Concerning "ignore" everyone gets to choose what is right for them and nobody gets to tell me I'm wrong, except those already on my ignore list or who are destined to be there. They don't care if I put them on "ignore" anyways, I do it for me.

43. I use it liberally. Life's too short to willfully subject yourself to "kiddie scorn". . .
I've never blocked anyone who intelligently debated me, but I'll not suffer fools gladly or madly.

And mostly its simple stupidity I wish to avoid -- drunken fools, whacked-out conspiracy nuts ("BushCo caused the tsunami"), one-note wonders who post the same drivel over and over. . . Other people may choose what they perceive as the "high road" of tolerance and community, but I've no time for blithering foolishness and no interest in useless poppycock. Some will disagree but I figure they must have a surplus of life.

If it makes you feel better about the DU "family" or some other such fantasy, you can occasionally clear your entire Ignore list. I do. Often, I find those I've shut off were soon after tombstoned, so I don't feel I missed anything.

45. hell no, that would ruin all the good fun!
In all seriousness, I don't understand why people get so emotional and let people affect them personally here. If something is offensive enough for me to put a poster on ignore, it's offensive enough to be alerted on. That's my policy, anyways. I alert once in a blue moon, and only for systematically abusive posters and never put anyone on ignore. Ignorance, hatred, and bigotry should be left up for all to see so others know what they are dealing with.

I'm not the most prolific poster anyway and I tend to not have the emotional investment required.

Interestingly, If I monitor topics rather than the poster themselves, I've found myself, on occasion, in agreement with people I've been very tempted to put on ignore on entirely separate topics.

Any others usually go away, eventually.

This would be my vast club of filthy flamers and the boors (ever changingly; that is, different ones every time) who see fit to be the FIRST to post in one of my threads with something original like,

* "What did you EXPECT?!1" (from Faux, LIMBOsevic, O'LOOFAH, et al.)

* "What are you doing watching/listening-to (Faux, LIMBOsevic, O'LOOFAH, et al.) (Uh, keeping the enemy closer; NOT liking to live in an echo chamber; LIKING to know rather than not to know.)

* "Turn it off. You're only giving them ratings." (Uh, no, I'm not a diarist for Nielsen/Arbitron.)

And those are just the MILD ones!1

And the thing is, at any given time, there are SCADS of similar threads/posts to mine, yet these jerks, for some unfathomable reason, are profoundly attracted ONLY to mine. They never post the same crap in all of those SCADS of similar places.

HooKAY!1 Well, *that* felt good. Saved me a few p.m.(s) for now.

If you can't deal with criticism and counter arguments, then you don't really have any business posting your own.

90. The problem is...
...some of them *would* *not* *listen* to a single word you said. At which point, there was no point wasting your energy on them. Ignore soon became my friend.

Unless they outed themselves as a racist. In which case, it's ass kicking time before the granite lands.

63. Why does one need a button to ignore someone?
In fact, isn't that kind of an oxymoron?

"I'm ignoring you! See! I pushed the button next to your name to indicate the degree to which I'm ignoring you! I hope it hurts your feelings! Ha ha!"

Oh goody! A thread asking me how many people I ignore! Now I can tell everyone how vigorously and diligently I'm ignoring them, and how vindicated I feel because the target of my active disregard was subsequently tombstoned!"

"Sigh. I wish they'd come back so that I could ignore them some more."

68. I have over 10 on my list
I thought maybe I was being overly sensitive so the list was cleared about nine months ago but most of the same people have wound up back on it. Winding up there again wasn't even the result of things said to me, necessarily; some people are just assholes. I'd most likely avoid them in the real world, too, if their day-to-day behavior and attitudes were anything like that of their online alter-egos.

77. 2 or 3, and solely due to nasty personal insults
for simply disagreeing with them. Didn't want the temptation of being curious enough to read their latest insult and taking it too personally. I know its recommended to have a thick skin here ,but I don't; I can take even vehement disagreement ,but was truly shocked and hurt to have been gratuitously attacked by complete strangers, and for my own emotional protection I put them on ignore.

80. I don't get why people think ignore has something to do with free speech
and people's rights to opinions.

Putting a person on ignore does not ban them from posting on here. All it does is prevent you from seeing their posts. They are quite free to still have any opinions they want and post whatever they want. It's no different than changing a television station if you don't like what they're showing - they can still show it and other people who want to watch it still can.

I used to have a rather large ignore list. I recently cleared it out and now it only has one person - a very obvious troll.

I just don't see the huge problem with putting someone on ignore. Why would someone who has no idea that I exist care that I chose to not see their posts anymore?

88. Never. Using Ignore seems to me to be a sign of insecurity
If I use Ignore enough, everyone on the board (as far as I can see) will agree with my views, proving that I am right.

Or a sign of hypersensitivity- a poster who just makes me so *ANGRY* that I have to do the cyber-equivalent of clamping my hands firmly over my ears. I guess some people may need to do this to keep their blood pressure low, but not me. There is *nothing* anyone can post that could make me in any way angry. Respectful disagreement; fervent disagreement; disgust; but never anger.

And I would never put a troll on ignore. Watching trolls is like a free trip to the zoo.

89. At one point, I think I had well over 60 on ignore.
This was towards the end of the primaries, when the pro-Hillary crowd got really nasty. Most of them (and all of the more notorious ones) didn't survive long after the primaries ended.

Currently, I have no one on ignore.

96. One, one time, but my list is empty now
I put the particular poster on ignore after receiving a couple of nasty PM's. Instead of calling for the mods, I just blocked the poster altogether so I could continue with a nice posting experience.

After about a year, I unblocked that poster, figuring any issues he was having with me would have vanished or been long forgotten. It may be that this post is seen by that poster and the PM's resume, but I hope not, because the next time, I will forward them, along with the previous ones, to the Admins and let them handle it (a warning, just in case I guess).

It was a way to give that poster another chance, rather than go for the ban right away as a knee jerk reaction to my anger with him.

105. Two in all my years.
One, back in the 04 primaries, a DUer who sent me a nasty ass PM. That DUer is off ignore now though and he has been for long time. Currently I have who I feel to be DU's worst attention whore on ignore. Can't imagine that person will ever come off.

Other than that, I doubt the list will grow. You really lose out on a lot. There were a few posters from the 04 primary that really annoyed me but I never ignored them. Now a couple of them are my fav DUers. You never know how your view of others may evolve into something good.

:toast: To evolution!
