This was an opinion letter written into the Des Moines Register:
"On a recent hunt, I was told there was a tame deer in the area. What a thrill when this small deer joined our hunting party. It must have been a sight to see six hunters dressed in blaze orange and a small doe walking along with us.
I stopped to admire this terrific animal. The deer enjoyed the petting and reciprocated by licking my hand. The doe had been saved from the spring floodwaters by a family, and they have made the effort to have it survive in its own environment.
As we parted company I couldn't help but feel the future was grim for this very unusual treasure. Hunters in the Story County area: Don't shoot a small doe standing in a field. (The doe is about 1 year old and quite small.)
