Snow Won’t Comment On 18-Day Gap: ‘I’ve Been Led To Believe There’s A Good Response For It'

Researchers have discovered an 18-day gap in the 3,000 documents on the U.S. Attorney purge released this week by the Justice Department. The gap extends from mid-November to early December, “which was a critical period as the White House and Justice Department reviewed, then approved, which U.S. attorneys would be fired while also developing a political and communications strategy for countering any fallout from the firings.”

During today’s press briefing, CNN’s Ed Henry noted that one of the last emails before the gap is from Attorney General Alberto Gonzales ex-chief of staff Kyle Sampson to then-White House Counsel Harriet Miers, asking, “Who will determine whether this requires the president’s attention?”

White House spokesman Tony Snow refused to explain the gap, telling reporters, “I’ve been led to believe that there’s a good response for it.” He said President Bush “has no recollection of this ever being raised with him.”

The U.S. Attorney document gap.

“In DOJ documents that were publicly posted by the House Judiciary Committee, there is a gap from mid-November to early December in e-mails and other memos, which was a critical period as the White House and Justice Department reviewed, then approved, which U.S. attorneys would be fired while also developing a political and communications strategy for countering any fallout from the firings.”

UPDATE: McClatchy and the AP reprint some noteworthy emails from the documents. March 20, 2007 9:58 pm | Comment (72)

I can't believe this...for you youngsters who don't know the history, Woods was Nixon's secretary, and took the fall for an "18 MINUTE GAP" in Nixon's secret tapes. This sounds almost like an Onion story!

Yeah, we live in the freaking twilight zone don't we. I had the pleasure of seeing Arlo Guthrie in the early 90's and he did an update of Alice's Restaurant where he altered the story to ponder on the significance of the fact that the original AR was about 18 minutes long and that was the missing time in the Nixon tapes. I'm pretty sure this was all predicted by Nostradamus somewhere along the line. Going to dig a fallout shelter now.

12. That is such a convoluted response
He doesn't know the response to why there's a gap. He's not even clear on whether he's been told that there is a good response to it. He's only been led to believe there's a response. In other words, he's been told by others that there's a faith-based feeling that there might be a good reason for the gap.

This is even worse than the WMD "programs" tripe, or Saddam's "programs to think about means to develop a future plan to contemplate the eventual start-up of a committee to oversee the design of candidates for possible programs to develop WMDs, maybe".

53. No! They know that there
are at least 15-20% of Americans that listen to Limpballs and Insanity 3 hours a day, 5 days a week that are that stupid, and they can always count on that stupidity making it into the Lame-Stream Media.

Tony could tell the press that the "tubes on the internets got clogged up during those 18 days" and Faux and ABC would soon have "experts" on that could verify that "yes, sometimes the tubes get clogged", (even better if they could label them as a Democrat strategist) - and then Hannity would explain that "look, haven't you ever sent an e-mail and gotten an 'unable to deliver' message back".

I can understand that there are 15-20% that will believe anything Faux, or Limpballs, or Insanity tells them, they're idiots. What I don't understand is how that stupidity makes it's way into "legitimate" news programs.

Tony has told us:

1.) Bush knew about the planned firings, and received advice on the issue. It WAS raised with him - "No recollection" is just a way to dodge an out & out lie.

2.) There's no good response to this. Otherwise, Tony would have received that "good response" in talking points form. They have no defense, and they know it.

56. Yes, partially,,,,the 18 minute gap on the tapes. "deja vu all over again", as Yogi Berra would say
Woo hoo. You really can't make this shit up. Oh man, if it turns out that evidence was destroyed we could really be in for some fun times. Popcorn, anyone?

69. It was more the smoking gun tape.
Nixon did not want to release the unedited tapes.

I'll never forget his press conference, with him standing there in front of a desk full of notebooks. The notebooks contained typed, edited versions of the tapes that he chose to release. He told us, "I am not a crook."

The Supreme Court made him hand over the tapes. The smoking gun tape showed that he had gotten the FBI to back off of the investigation of the Watergate burglary. The smoking gun tape was dated six days after the burglary.

I want a smoking gun e-mail!!!

57. Tony, Tony, Tony...Why did you take that call???
I remember that you said that you couldn't say no to the President when he called to ask you to be his WH spokesman. You should have let the answering machine take the call.

58. I was young at the time, but didn't Tricky Dick have some tapes missing during the Water Gate days?
I could be wrong.

64. Here, this may help our post-Watergate younger friends
I was in high school and college during the Nixon years. DU'ers of at least that age will remember vividly but it probably sounds like gibberish to someone under 50.

Long story short, a subpoena'd Nixon magnetic tape recorded in the Oval Office came up with an eighteen minute gap -- which was explained to have been an error on the part of Nixon's secretary, Rose Mary Woods.

Wiki has a decent explanation, if you please: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watergate_tapes

"forgot"?

don't recall
can't remember
no recollection
etc
etc

70. Why isn't this making the news at 6PM???
Especially when you pay attention to Snow's last comment (OOPS!) "...the removal..."
He actually let slip a comment - in reference to Bush's knowledge of the missing 18 days - about the REMOVAL OF ??? What?
What the fuck is wrong with this picture?
What the fuck is wrong with Lou Dobbs?
What the fuck is wrong with CNN?

Indeed what the fuck is wrong with this thread that no-one seems particularly agitated by this, but instead is going all tinfoil about numerology. (Fun, but off the point)
Am I missing something obvious to everyone else?

74. Well, we bitch when the MSM repeats stuff without checking it out,
so we should probably give them 24 hours to get their ducks in a row on this.

Before those tapes or backup drives are "lost" or erased permanently. :argh:

77. Q: "Who will determine whether this requires the president's attention?" A: The Law
I read somewhere else on DU that there's a law (exec order?) requiring that only the PRESIDENT can fire/hire US Attorneys.

So in this case, Bush can't make an underling fall on their sword.

Anyone remember where this thread was? (It was on Greatest a couple of days ago.)

82. Just as accurate, Snow could have prefaced his statement "Astrologers believe ..."
Snowjob is just blathering on with what he is given, but he is smart enough to know that nothing they give him is likely to be credible, and he will need to allege 'he was misled' when he leaves this job.
