Yet another reason we need universal single payer health insurance....
You've heard of people locked into their jobs, unable to retire or move on to another job because they'd lose their health insurance?

Well, my son is going for a very tough technical degree. He's fulfilled all his non-technical distribution requirements. He really shouldn't attempt more than 3 technical courses a semester at the level he's at because of all the homework involved. BUT, to qualify under OUR health insurance, he needs to be a full-time student, so he needs to take 2 more courses a semester. In other words, already strapped for time meeting the requirements for his major, he has to take courses the school doesn't require in order to meet the insurance company's standard!

2. It is stupid.
My bf is going through the same thing with his college aged kids. The 21 year old had to drop a class and got dropped from the insurance. The 19 year old lives with him as a dependent but also got the runaround from the insurance co. about how many classes he was taking.

Oh, and think about the fact that the majority of 18 to 24 year olds DON'T go to college and usually aren't working in jobs that have any benefits. They are truly screwed. It's one of the reason I'm leery of so-called "universal" plans that are really just mandates to buy insurance. I'm afraid young wage-slaves will be stuck paying expensive premiums for crap catastrophic plans. We need single payer. Get the insurance industry out of health care and make it a progressive tax.

3. Absolutely that's a problem. I wonder how many young blue collar workers
have never had employer sponsored health insurance. Back when my generation graduated, a lot of us went to college or straight into a union job, so we were covered one way or the other.

Of course, got to love that Catch-22: My cousin's son broke his leg so badly he couldn't work for several months. Since he couldn't work, he was fired. Since he was fired, there went his health insurance!

4. Insurance companies have all the power
If you really want to torque off a fundie, tell them that the Rapture won't happen because Jay-zus doesn't want to be liable for all the insurance claims for the accidents of all the cars with an "In case of Rapture, this car will be unmanned" bumper stickers.

6. NO -- NOT single payer health INSURANCE
We need a single payer healthCARE system.

The insurance companies need to be surgically REMOVED from the health care business. Anything less is asking for yet more problems.
