Won't be watching the video...
I don't celebrate an assault on our president, even Bush.

The segway incident, yep, funny. The pretzel? Same.

An individual hurling objects close enough to hit our president on foreign soil? No. Not funny.

Barack Obama will be our president in a few weeks, and we will emerge from this dark time. I want him safe. I want the Secret Service to do their job. I want him protected and respected.

So, no, I won't join in the party this time.

And I'm ashamed that so many here are.

Edited on Sun Dec-14-08 10:05 PM by qwlauren35
DU is almost exactly 8 years old - launched on the day that Bush took office. I think it's fair to say that its very purpose and existence center around a united disgust, distrust and dismay for George W. Bush.

As such, laughter at flying shoes is apropos.

Sad to say, there are some here who would cheer if he was assassinated. I myself have never wanted him murdered. But a heart attack... well, no tears.

41. Dear mgdecombe,
Yes, I can READ. And I have critical thinking skills, something you may want to look into.

The "office" that you so dearly respect and cherish has been defamed and tarnished for generations to come by a war criminal.

So, as was previously suggested, go fuck yourself with your "can't read" horseshit, you self-righteous blowhard.

Also, what's "disgusting" is your lack of empathy for a man whose country has been raped and pillaged (in OUR NAME and with OUR NATIONAL TREASURES, both material and HUMAN), to the point where, in your feeble little mind, "respect for the office of the President" transcends mass murder in importance and significance.

Idiot.

Sincerely,
freshwidow

...I don't support assaults on anybody.

Your "Obama" analogy is a red herring argument, not applicable to this situation, except in the scenario where, as has already been offered by a previous poster, Obama had committed WAR CRIMES and had a similar incident happen.

I'll give you a clue, genius: WAR CRIMINALS are subject to whatever justice they are served with, however it ends up happening. I would prefer a War Crimes Tribunal at the Hague for the various members of the Bush Crime Family, Bush and Cheney being the numbers one and two prosecuted.

WAR CRIMINALS do NOT get ANY RESPECT FOR ANY REASON.

Your Obama analogy is as full of shit as you apparently are.

168. If that's how you want to see him, then fine....
but there are those among us who didn't...don't now...and never will...view him as anything other than a usurper to the Presidency.

Be outraged if you choose to be.

But don't visit your finger wagging upon people who feel that Bush himself has done more to sully the entire White House than any justifiably angry Iraqi who flings his shoes at W's face could ever do.

And I'll tell you what....I'm an equal opportunity "deserves what he gets" type of person. I voted for Obama, but if he were to do the same things Bush has done, I'd be cheering on whomever tossed a shoe in his face as well.

So that's the bottom line.

You see the "Office"

Others here see "The man"

Do not even try to insist that he holds that office legitimately!!! If some of us don't believe Bush is in the White House legitimately, then that means we don't believe he is really President. And if he isn't President, then that Iraqi journalist didn't even come close to insulting "The office".

Save the outrage for things like little Iraqi children with their limbs or faces blown off....not an angry man who "insults" the office of President by throwing a shoe at him.

So Bush gives an edict that kills hundreds of thousands of people, permits the torture of thousands, and when someone damaged by these monsters "throws a shoe" at the culprit, you cry about propriety? Give me a break.

Talk about blaming the victim. You're not reasonable. You're detached from reality. There's a really big difference between the two.

34.  "to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile",
Edited on Sun Dec-14-08 09:19 PM by Ichingcarpenter
"The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole.

Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile.

To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.

Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else."

44. nice quote.
but irrelevant in this instance.

Where do you see the assault part?

Tell the truth about his acts. Yes.
Blame him when he does wrong. Yes.
Praise him when he does right? Well, there has not been ONE thing to praise.

"Throw shoes at him"- I can't find that passage...

Bug off? No one asked you to post in this thread. Do you oppose my right to state my opinion? Who's the servile one?

Bush isn't deserving of my respect, or anybody's respect for that matter.

"How again are you different from a right-wing nutjob saying the same after the 20th of Jan?"

Er... maybe because the right-wingers want him dead because of the color of his skin? Or because he has a funny name? Or merely the fact that he's a "librul"? Has Obama invaded a country, based on lies, only to fill the pockets of his rich corporate friends? Has Obama ordered hundreds of people tortured, and held them for 5 or 6 years at a concentration camp? Has Obama outed a covert CIA operative just because he wanted to get revenge on her husband for calling him out on his bullshit?

I will never, ever understand how George Bush can still be alive today. They killed John and Robert Kennedy, they killed Martin Luther King, yet George war criminal Bush lives?

for the same reason that Obama does - he was elected. We transfer power peacefully in this country. We use the power of the vote to change.

Murder requires intent. How will you prove intent?

Also liar, requires intent and foreknowledge of the lie. How will you prove this? And both under what law? The senate voted repeatedly to allow the war and gave its open consent in the continued funding. You make it sound like this was his personal war.

You need to be practical. Let him slide into history, like Clinton (who did nothing will 850,000 were butchered in Rawanda) and let his history judge him.

blind respect for authority.

I don't care what titles these wealthy pricks bequeath upon one another-- and yes, the title of President was bequeathed to Bush-- he did not earn it in any way. I won't pretend to respect an arrogant fool just because he's got a nice title.

I agree, a shoe is not the way. I look forward to a proper trial and the lawful penalty for treason, war crimes and genocide.

120. You couldn't even get the guy impeached, yet you're talking about 'lawful penalty'?
Get real, this motherfucker will spend the rest of his days sipping of piña coladas on the beaches of some Latin-American paradise, paid for by the millions of dollars he has stolen from the American tax payers. Then when he dies, he will be buried in the US with all the honors and all the regards and all presidents after him and all the media will mourn him, just like they did with Ronny Raygun.

158. You may be right...
It wasn't up to me, however. And I won't have you extinguish all my optimism, okay?

Efforts for justice are still underway, however laughable they may seem to you. This is a time of flux. Pinochet was held in Britain for a few months many years after his crimes, and still got away, but that was a step forward, no? After Jan. 20th, a lot of people may be willing to talk who were silent until now. Next year is going to be one of the worst ever for the United States, and somehow I think people will retain enough memory to know the Bush regime is largely responsible. So let's see where we are in a couple of years.

Flip away. Any time I get the opportunity I will flip off that faux cowboy.

Just no throwing. Of anything. Not cool.

Yes, and showing the soles is a cultural message, too. That would be enough for me.

A better cultural message would be a trial for war crimes, yes.

122. Posters on DU say they countenance the act
But as I remarked on another post, no one would carry out such an idiotic act in real life.

Bush has already got his comeuppance politically - the election of Barack Obama (and on a smaller note heavy Democratic majorities in congress). He will be remembered in putrid terms by popular opinion and analysis. No need to wish physical harm to him...it makes him more sympathetic on the contrary.

143. Comeuppance?
You're joking, right? Bush didn't run this year and will most likely die an old man in a comfortable bed. This is a man who has the blood of millions on his hands if we count all those directly and indirectly affected by his bumbling greed and psychopathic disregard for life.

It was just a pair of shoes and was probably the closest this bastard will ever come to justice.

I contend that if he were to suffer physical harm, I'm sure there would be more people worldwide who would rejoice than those who would have pity on him.

You're upset about shoes man, a fucking pair of shoes, alright? If it were something seriously harmful, you might have a point. If the shoe-target was anything less than this c***, after all he's done, you might have a point.

As it stands, I want to buy this guy dinner.

134. This wasn't just a President...This was a MAN.
A man who brought misery, death, destruction and shame to a nation that was guilty of NO CRIMES AGAINST THE US.

I could care less if that man occupies the same address as Lincoln, JFK and Bill Clinton. He has no right to walk the same earth with as much respect. Nor will history give it to him.

Look, Saddam is LONG DEAD. All that's left in Iraq is a people reeling from a catastrophe that is none of their doing.

I can understand their hatred. I feel their hatred.

I cannot blame them for their hatred.

142. I think Obama will be protected and respected.
The whole world was watching our election, and the response was almost unanimous joy. People are remarkably forgiving. I bet even most Iraqis WISH they could like us - we've just made that impossible for them.

Bush is such a collossal fuckup I am delighted to see him being insulted and disrespected, anywhere. He's earned it. I'm looking forward to seeing the contrast in reception that Obama will get - and I just pray he won't disappoint people too much (it's inevitable that he will, somewhat, after all). If he gets the level of respect in the world that Bill Clinton got and still has, that will be fine.
