Rep. Hoekstra Won’t Seek Re-Election in 2010
Rep. Hoekstra Won’t Seek Re-Election in 2010
By Emily Cadei, CQ Staff

Rep. Pete Hoekstra said Monday he will not seek a 10th term in 2010, clearing the way for a possible run for Michigan governor.

Hoekstra, R-Mich, made the announcement in a letter to constituents on his campaign Web site.

“We would like to let you personally know that we have decided that this past election will signify my last term in the House of Representatives,” Hoekstra wrote with his wife, Diane. “In 2010 it will be time for us to move on to new challenges.”

Hoekstra easily won re-election last month, beating Democrat Fred Johnson 62 percent to 35 percent in Michigan’s reliably conservative 2nd District.

Hoekstra has been openly considering a run for governor for months and has not been shy about his interest in succeeding Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who cannot seek re-election because of term limits.

1. The Dems better come up with an outstanding candidate for Gov.

8. There probably won't be an outstanding candidate for Gov.
The Dem. nominee will likely be Lieutenant Governor John Cherry. The only other big name was former Detroit mayor Dennis Archer and he already said he won't run. I have nothing against John Cherry but he just doesn't seem like a particularly strong candidate. The GOP is such a damaged brand that Cherry will have a good chance at winning. The only Republican I can see winning is US Representative Candice Miller and I don't think she'll run.

10. It's an annual thing.
But, even Holland is reeling from Michigan's economic downturn.. Hoekstra plans on running for governor.. Few Dem's show similar interest.. Hope we don't loose Michigan's governorship during it's pending redistricting battles.. He's a lousy choice. In the run up to the Iraq war, his chairmanship of House intelligence was hardly stellar. He contributed to its falsification in Iraq and recently Iran ..

9. Too bad it's such a conservative district
Whoever the Republican nominee is will likely win. The Democrats will have a much better chance of defeating McCotter, who only got 51% this year.
