Sarcasm useful for detecting dementia
Monday, 15 December 2008
Agence France-Presse

SYDNEY: Sarcasm may be the lowest form of wit, but Australian scientists are using it to diagnose dementia, according to a new study.

Researchers at the University of New South Wales, in Sydney, found that patients under the age of 65 suffering from frontotemporal dementia (FTD), the second most common form of dementia, cannot detect when someone is being sarcastic.

The authors say that the study, published in the journal Brain, helps explain why patients with the condition behave the way they do and why, they are unable to pick up their caregivers' moods.

I just thought this deserved its own thread

5. that seems to be backwards in conclusion though
Somebody with dementia cannot recognize sarcasm. Yeah, well I imagine there's lots of other things people with dementia cannot do too. It does not follow from the observed fact about people with dementia that therefore people who cannot recognize sarcasm have dementia, and that seems to be the way those researchers are presenting it.

Vonnegut said something about this in "Mother Night" though. In that book, Howard Campbell was an American spy in Nazi Germany, because he was married to a German actress. He did radio shows like Father Coughlin or Rush Limbaugh. He said he figured that nobody would take his radio shows seriously because they were so over the top that most people would see they were satire. But his father-in-law said "'I realized that almost all the ideas that I hold now, that make me unashamed of anything I may have felt or done as a Nazi, came not from Hitler, not from Goebbels, not from Himmler - but from you.' He took my hand. 'You alone kept me from concluding that Germany had gone insane.'"

7. Hang on: that's been up for nearly 2 years, and they've protected it?
So the moderators of Conservapedia really think that there's no difference between their efforts, and liberal satire?

Does that mean they're actually proud that they sound like the satire we come up with? They're happy that they've gone so far we cannot properly satirise them?

That might be the most frightening thing I've read on there. Or, they actually have a great sense of humour, and they've left that there just to worry liberals like us?
