Getting Sen. Salazar out of the Senate is OK with me
Salazar for interior is not my choice but he won't do a lot harm there:

Supported the nomination of Alberto Gonzales
Voted to limit plaintiffs' ability to bring Class Actions
supported the Telecon bill FISA bill
plus numerous other bad votes
and he's a blue dog democrat.

The Colorado Governor will likely appoint
a true progressive Rep. Diana DeGette

2. I was thinking the same thing
If he's good on the environment and other interior issues, get him out of the Senate where he won't do too much damage and get a true progressive in the seat.

7. Bob Geiger put Salazar on his list of Senators of major weasels

In 2005, I think he gave him 12 weasels.

Salazar also voted with Bush on torture.

3. I made a earlier post. in another thread - here's my choices...

Bill Hickenlooper - mayor of Denver (VERY popular)
Mike Miles - former candidate (that Salazar weaseled away from) to the U.S. Senate
Wellington Webb - former mayor of Denver, African American (could very well be the 1st true African American to US Senate, Obama is 1st African American of mixed race)
Diana DeGette - Currently a U.S. Congresswoman representing District 1 (Denver). Supporter of stem cell research, verified voting.

Other choices:

Ken Gordon - an EXTREMELY popular term-limited (finished his term this year) State Senator that ran and lost to Mike "I'll fuck up your votes if I wanna" Coffmann for Colorado's Secretary of State. It would give me tickly feeling if Gordon outranked Coffmann by the time Jan 5th rolled in (Coffmann as a useless Congressman, Gordon as a Senator) - since he is a big advocate of verified voting, and represented my district well.

9. Wellington Webb use to shop at my Safeway in Capital Hill
He was a decent mayor but isn't he old now?

I like that you keep me up on Colorado Politics. I met Hickenlooper when his pub
first opened and he could learn the ropes of the Senate. However, I think
DeGette is my favorite. Salazar is fairly decent on western land issues, but
I had others in mind.

Obama choice could be a nice twofer that helps the democrats and progressives.

10. Mike Miles, definitely! After the abuse he took from the State DEMS, they OWE it to him!
The others are so-so, and could end up doing the same things Salazar has done.

6. All that aside, I think he'll make a good Sec. of Interior
As our Attorney General he was always involved in water rights disputes and the like. I doubt that there's anybody more familiar with the pertinent laws than him, and I'm happy because he'll hopefully be a voice for the states where it snows, like Colorado, against the idiots who think it's a great idea to keep building golf courses in the desert.

13. I heard Salazar's cousin as a possible pick
He's a dino from what I heard from Congress and others so
I wouldn't want him as a pick.

Both score well on the environment but not so much on human rights
constitution rights and labor rights.

YEah, he's one terrific senator. :sarcasm:

Yet many of us on DU who were working for his opponent in the primaries got SCALDED here.

Where are his apologists now?????

14. he's another virtual repuke appointed by Obama.
It's getting to be a regular thing.

Good for the Senate though.

15. But on environmental issues he'll be fine
He did a good job on that as Colorado AG. Now that he'll be focused on that one thing, I think we'll have reason to be happy with this pick a year from now.

16. True. Salazar is Mostly Harmless in Interior. Who's gonna replace him?
I am wondering who Ritter's going to appoint in his place. DeGette, maybe. Ed Perlmutter's another option - he's pretty popular. He could also keep the seat in the family by appointing John Salazar.

Who else is in the short list?
