Two prominent Hillary Clinton supporters who have expressed opposition to - or at the very least, reservations about - the idea of Caroline Kennedy inheriting Clinton's US Senate seat insisted to me that their comments were not the result of an organized effort by the Clinton camp.
The fact that people close to Clinton started coming out of the woodwork one after another last week to question Kennedy's qualifications led a number of observers to suspect that perhaps the outgoing junior senator wasn't keen on the idea that someone who had endorsed Barack Obama during the Democratic primary would get her seat.
But a source close to Clinton rejected that idea, noting that it wouldn't be smart of Clinton to engage in that kind of politics at a time when she's poised to join Obama's team.
Meanwhile, Robert Zimmerman, a DNC member and Clinton advisor/fundraiser, said no one asked him to say anything anti-Kennedy.
"Let me be real clear: I speak for myself," he said. "I certainly never spoke with anyone associated with the Clinton world about my comments; I was reacting to a question from Lou Dobbs on CNN."
Last week, Zimmerman said on CNN that the reason Kennedy hadn't yet been endorsed by any prominent New York Democrats was because "we're not a state of dynasty." He later elaborated on that to the NY Post, saying:
"She's not demonstrated the qualifications or the experience for the position, and I think what's critical here to focus on for a moment is we have an extraordinary spectrum of candidates who have truly demonstrated how they serve New York state and serve the country."
