After Abu Ghraib these women will be assumed to have been raped while in custody which in a muslim culture is a death sentence. But don't dare throw a shoe at the person who caused all this or you are the bad guy. We live in a weird world.

BAGHDAD - The U.S. military has announced that it is no longer holding women detainees in custody in Iraq.

A U.S. statement says the last 10 female detainees were handed over to Iraqi authorities on Monday. They have either been convicted of a security-related offense or are due to stand trial in the Central Criminal Court of Iraq.

The U.S. still holds about 15,500 detainees. This is down dramatically from the high of about 26,000 in November 2007.

It will take generations for them to get any semblance of normalcy.

3. Iraq? Iraq? That's Sooooooo 2005....
If the Iraqi reporter hadn't thrown his shoes, most of us wouldn't have known the fukstick was in Iraq or that this agreement was even done, yet what's inside it. It's become not only a forgotten war by most of us who want it over, but to this regime that just wants to walk away from its own mess and not have to assume any responsibility.

The list for war crimes against this regime is long and still growing and just cause they're out of power on January 20th shouldn't mean they walk from the damage they've done. Iraq is way beyond the capacity of our government (even with a President Obama) or recovering Justice Department can handle alone. I not only welcome an international inquiry into any and all crimes committed in the lead up and since the invasion of Iraq...and prosecutions of those who gave orders and profited from this disaster.

It just frosts my ass to see Rummy walking free, the same with crashcart, Erik Prince, Wolfowitz and those that not only have the blood of our 4,000 plus lost and thousands of walking wounded, but all those in Iraq and throughout the region who were pawns in their Risk game.

So the military claims it no longer is holding female detainees? From what I can see, there's still 150,000 American troops with another 150,000 mercenaries. Sure sounds like we still have the entire country under detention.

Cheers...

4. I have
been told to stop "whining" about Iraq by some regular DUers - told that I should focus on the future :wtf:

As if the occupation of Iraq is okay.

Well... It is not okay.

As of today 4,209 Americans have died (reported dead) in Iraq.

Iraqis killed? Try this on for size: 1,297,997

The complacency is astounding. This thread will sink like a brick.

10. and the unspoken words of protest at DU bespeak volumes!

Oh look outside the window, there's a woman being grabbed

They've dragged her to the bushes and now she's being stabbed

Maybe we should call the cops and try to stop the pain

But Monopoly is so much fun, I'd hate to blow the game

And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody

14. If we allow this to go unpunished, like Clinton did last time, we will
be, deservedly, branded for committing crimes against humanity and suffer the very real consequences that come with our new reputation.

Obama tries to "look to the future" on this one and we're even more fucked.

Is the US ready to take on the rest of the world? I don't think so.

15. Hey, I may be Alaskan - but I know how to
:kick:

NNN - it was my hope that the Red Cross/Crescent would be available for the repatriation of these poor women, whose only crime was to be Iraqi during our invasion of their country. I guess my hopes will be unrealized.

I'm tired of crying, but my eyes won't stop.
