Youthful and zealous, Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Dallas, still evokes the image of the economics student who fell under then-Professor Gramm's spell at Texas A&M University in the 1970s.
He shares many of Mr. Gramm's views, including the belief that government, not banks or investors, bears most of the blame for the financial crisis.
"Peel away the layers of the onion of the economic crisis that we see today, and you will find the heavy hand of government," Mr. Hensarling said last week.
That view is a minority one in Congress, and clearly sets Mr. Hensarling apart from Democrats who are preparing a sweeping regulatory overhaul of financial services and enhanced consumer protections. Yet Mr. Hensarling, 51, remains a fast-rising member of the House and an influential member of the committee that will rewrite those laws.
Rep. Barney Frank, D.-Mass., chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said Mr. Hensarling "gets changes made" to legislation "more than any of his fellow conservative members."
