37% of Americans cannot find USA on map : Gallup poll
Edited on Tue Dec-16-08 03:49 PM by Mari333
Washington, D.C. -- According to a Gallup/Harris poll released Monday, a full 37 percent of American citizens are incapable of identifying their home country on a map of the United States.

Of the 1,400 residents surveyed, the most common incorrect responses placed the more than 230-year-old territory in the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans (19 percent), the space where Mexico would appear were it in fact included on the map (10 percent), and inside the word "America" written just above the northernmost states (6 percent).

24. I sometimes wonder, this satire is a bit too close to reality for comfort...
I took that New Yorker cover featuring afro-Michelle and turbin-Barack way too seriously too.

I'm hopeless.

Edited on Tue Dec-16-08 03:54 PM by Deep13
...and more than a third of them still got it wrong!

When I first saw the OP subject, I assumed it was an unmarked map of the world. Wow, are we ever bone stupid!

P.S.
OOPS, it's a joke. I guess Americans have such a reputation for ignorance I naturally assumed it was true.

29. I blame television. It has dumbed us down ... a lot.
Of course, our educational system is producing results that are slightly better than the educational systems of most third world countries. The number of people we allow to live in poverty is also becoming similar to that of third world countries. As poverty increases, literacy and education decrease.

We've always been less educated than the people of Western Europe, but I had such high hopes for us.

:(
