Personally, if someone at some swanky function said, "I'd like you to meet President bush", I'd REFUSE to shake his hand, then I'd call him the worst disgrace to America ever. 23. You know, I have a friend who had to meet VP Cheney. This friend is an avowed

left wing liberal, and without going into details, for his job he had to be at a function where circumstances made it necessary to be introduced to Cheney and shake his hand. He gritted his teeth through the whole thing, but he couldn't get out if it, and he couldn't say anything, and he basically just did the best he could to get through it and get it over with.

When I was talking with him about it later I commented on how I don't think I could have gone through with it, I would have had to wash my hands immediately, etc. etc. etc.

But then I was struck by a philosophical point. I wouldn't call myself an "intellectual", necessarily, but I do think about a lot of things and I have something of an intellectually inquisitive nature, and I think sometimes scientific/philosophical curiosities sometimes trump ideological concerns.

I saw that this actually might have been one of those times for me, had I been in my friend's position. Although it would have been repellent on so many levels to shake the hand of the monster Cheney, I can't help but think that, from a philosophical point of view, it might actually be fascinating to literally shake the hand of a man you know is going to Hell.

And the handshake itself would show my disapproval. I wouldn't grip his hand. I would keep my fingers stiff and withdraw my hand quickly enough that he would know I couldn't stand to be touched by him. It's subtle enough that only he would get it while everyone else would miss it entirely. Sometimes these gestures are far more effective than words.
