The truth is the main roadblock to gay rights is:

3. Except, despite Leviticus, Red Lobster remains in business.
So religion is just a red herring.

6. Selective enforcement of "God's Law"
Sure, they'll get up and shave in the morning, eat bacon with their eggs for breakfast, put on a wool-polyester blend suit and go to work (sometimes on Sunday) grab a cheeseburger for lunch, and eat that lobster dinner at Red Lobster. And some will even "know" their wives when it's er, that time of the month.

All of which are "abominations" according to Leviticus.

But those goddamned queers will destroy civilization !!11!11!11! Can't have that.

16. Right, it's picking and choosing.
Ergo, the bigotry was there before the religion.

4. That's only an excuse for bigotry
I know some REALLY religious people, who are quite conservative otherwise, that aren't homophobic, unlike many "liberal" DUers posting here today.

11. My one step-grandfather is a batshit insane freeper, but "he likes the gays"
If he can support gay rights, anybody can.

12. Seriously. It's not that hard. And, it certainly shouldn't be an issue on DU.

7. Nah. People diverge with religion ALL THE TIME when it suits them. Look at
extramarital sex, divorce, abortion.

When people use religion to support anti gay views, it's just because it suits their own bigotry.

13. The more fundamentalist the church, the higher the divorce rate..
Jesus the Christ never mentioned gays, but He did strongly condemn divorce for anything other than adultery.

18. Pretty much everyone at our wedding, except for the DU contingent and a couple friends
were devout Catholics and mostly Republican.

They don't use their religion to be a bigot.

19. Thank you. I think the person chooses the religious view that suits them - bigots
will of course choose a bigoted view.

10. The truth is the main roadblock to gay rights is:
Hatred and Bigotry

There are lots of religious people who are not haters. While some right wingers use religion as a tool of hate, there are still many non-bigoted people who happen to be religious. I can't blame religion so much as I blame hate and bigotry and the use of religion to oppress people. That doesn't mean all religious people, though.

17. Indeed. There are religious people FOR and AGAINST equal rights. But the AGAINST
is universally bigoted.

15. An overgeneralization
as I know of several Sufi orders that do not discriminate, but rather give equal honor to gays and lesbians.
