Three football players are accused of beating Palestinian students outside a dorm at their small Quaker college.

By David Zucchino, Times Staff Writer
January 24, 2007

Durham, N.C. — Durham, N.C. --

Three football players at Guilford College, a small Quaker school with a legacy of nonviolence
and religious tolerance, have been charged with assaulting three Palestinian students who said
they also were subjected to ethnic slurs.

Police in Greensboro said the students told them a group of men outside a Guilford dormitory
beat them with feet, fists and brass knuckles. The Palestinians declined medical treatment
immediately after the incident early Saturday morning but sought treatment Sunday,
when they contacted police.

The three players, alleged to be in the group, were charged Monday with assault and battery
and ethnic intimidation. Each was released on $2,000 bond.

In a statement, the university called the alleged attack "an unnecessary and unfortunate incident."
The statement said the altercation lasted about five minutes and involved about a dozen students,
some of whom tried to break it up.

Some of the students at the scene had been drinking alcohol, the statement said.

Police identified the Palestinians as Faris Khadar and Osama Sabbah, both Guilford students,
and Omar Awartani, a North Carolina State University student who was visiting friends.
Police did not disclose the extent of their injuries. School officials said they had urged
the three to seek treatment.

3. Nixon was a Quaker
of sorts.

But that doesn't mean mainstream Quakers aren't working hard to fight poverty and seek peace and justice around the world.

8. Not necessarily.
Brass knuckles are more common than many think. However, at most universities, including the ones where I worked, they are illegal! They are considered weapons, and in some places, can get the person kicked off campus as quickly as if s/he had a gun or knife in her/his possession. So, in the very least, the one that had the brass knuckles is probably going "bye-bye."

16. The football players and recruits aren't necessarily Quakers
even though the school is.

9. Where does it say in the original artilce that the athletes are Quakers?
That's like saying

"Catholic Athletes charged in attack" just because they went to Notre Dame.

11. So do the Palestinians
snip
"Police identified the Palestinians as Faris Khadar and Osama Sabbah, both Guilford students"

I guess that makes the Palestinians Quakers then too.

18. Apparently they are!
He added: "We were beaten because of who we were, because of what they thought about us."

Awartani said the three had previously attended a Quaker school in Ramallah, in the West Bank.

6. That's what I thought.
I mean, just because these guys obviously got football scholarships to a Quaker school doesn't make 'em Quakers.

7. People on the players' side say it was two-way provocation
I don't think we should draw conclusions about what happened until the full story is in. What we have so far is the international students' side of the story. It may be a straight up hate crime, but then it might turn out to be something else. I suggest we hold off firing until the right target comes into view.

15. I'm sure someone already considered "the enemy" in the U.S. would provoke the football team.
Please.

Where did this happen again?

21. Not many Division III players go to the NFL
And if Guilford is true to its heritage, I have confidence that this will be handled in a fair and even-handed manner that will satisfy both perpetrators and victims. I am humbled by the Quakers' ability to do that.
