http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_the_United_States

Will Obama "reach out" to the non religious and give one of them a speaking role at his inauguration?

Or is this "reaching out" only for religious bigots?

1. Good Question - I Would Like To See A Humanist Give The Invocation
Fitting is Obama is truly tolerant.

Equally, watching Freeper heads explode would be so much fun!

25. The difference is that the majority of atheists/agnostics/etc. will vote Democratic anyways...
He does want to preserve the Party's majority. Using Warren over said atheist/etc. has the chance of pulling support from the right without the danger of losing the left. It's just politics.

3. Now this is Change
When has a religious speaker at a presidential inauguration ever been challenged before now?

Before Obama's first day, big change is happening. Good work, people!

8. Those number are different where you are at
because over here in the south aka "The bible belt" the non-religious make up 5% of the population (what I've herd on the TeeVee box :silly: ).

Also does that number figure in ALL the different religious believers or just a couple.

9. Do you believe everything you hear on the TV?
I don't..

I included a link for my claim, if you want more information I suggest that you go to the link.

The non religious have to keep a low profile in the South due to extreme bigotry that can screw up your life if you run afoul of it.

23. It's not just in the South.
I'm pretty much in the closet with regards to my Atheism to people from my little rural Minnesota hometown. Even very liberal people, such as my dad and folks on my dad's side of the family, have very negative views towards atheists.

12. Even at 15%, we're strangely invisible
Do we have to reach some higher percentage -- 20%, 25% -- to become visible, or do we just have to be louder and more assertive?

Louder and more assertive, I think. That process has begun, and we've seen what a raw nerve it touches.

14. Egocentricity should be classified as a religion.
Edited on Sat Dec-20-08 01:57 PM by gulliver
Then we could just say everyone is religious. Most of the religious and non-religious are in it for the community. That's why religions all gravitate, as everything else does, to the core motif of humanity: Professional Wrestling. Non-religions gravitate there too. IMO, to be really religious or non-religious you need to have better taste in entertainment.

16. I'm starting to think Obama should do away with the invocation and replace it with ...
... an inspiring speech about the Constitution.

Maybe even invite an historian to deliver it instead.

And people continue to fall for it.

Many of us are reluctant to come out, even to pollsters.

We'll probably have an openly gay president before we have an openly Atheist president. Lincoln was a non-believer but he never admitted it in public, he was the only atheist US president I know of.
