Marcia Pappas of NY NOW: Caroline hasn't "paid her dues"
As quoted in the NY Times:

Marcia Pappas, president of the New York State chapter of the National Organization for Women told me, politely: “We can have a number of people who are qualified and we have to be very respectful of people and their talents, but when it comes down to it, we have to be grown-ups. We think this position should go to someone who’s paid her dues, who’s done the work.”

.................

Gee, I wonder all this pushback on C.K. is coming from?

2. It has to do with a reaction against the culture of celebrity...CK's name comes up, she's
the front runner already. I don't think she's at all qualified, glad she came out for gay marriage, but run a campaign or at least be out in the public eye before you think you deserve a senate seat.

4. I don't think Pappas and Ferraro are reacting to Caroline's celebrity.
Just a hunch, but I could be wrong.

9. CK seems like a perfectly nice person
but it baffles me that she's in contention. On second thought, it doesn't baffle me at all, she's a Kennedy. I hate the fact that unqualified people are launched into the upper levels of government for no other reason than accident of birth. We've just been through 8 years of it with Bush, we don't need it with Caroline Kennedy. OTOH, the other contender is apparently Andrew Cuomo, another political scion. I'm not crazy about that either, but at least he's actually done something in politics.

5. The same Marcia Pappas who screamed bloody murder about women supporting women
during the primary, and compared the Kennedy family's endorsement of Obama to gang rape.

Translation: You're not one of my clique, therefore you don't count.

I started off a bit cool on Kennedy, but the more I see who her enemies are, the more I like her.

8. I know - the idea that not supporting HRC means you are anti- women is ridiculous
What I want to know is whether, as a Jew, I'm really antisemitic, because I was for Kerry, just because he was the candidate I most admired in my life, rather than supporting Lieberman in the 2004.

13. Whichever way you slice it, Marcia Pappas is full of it.
Either she was lying and spinning then, or she's lying and spinning now.

6. Marcia Pappas lost all credibility when she wrote this screed against Ted Kennedy
"ALBANY, NY (01/28/2008; 1101)(readMedia)-- Women have just experienced the ultimate betrayal. Senator Kennedy’s endorsement of Hillary Clinton’s opponent in the Democratic presidential primary campaign has really hit women hard. Women have forgiven Kennedy, stuck up for him, stood by him, hushed the fact that he was late in his support of Title IX, the ERA, the Family Leave and Medical Act to name a few. Women have buried their anger that his support for the compromises in No Child Left Behind and the Medicare bogus drug benefit brought us the passage of these flawed bills. We have thanked him for his ardent support of many civil rights bills, BUT women are always waiting in the wings.

And now the greatest betrayal! We are repaid with his abandonment! He’s picked the new guy over us. He’s joined the list of progressive white men who can’t or won’t handle the prospect of a woman president who is Hillary Clinton (they will of course say they support a woman president, just not “this” one). “They” are Howard Dean and Jim Dean (Yup! That’s Howard’s brother) who run DFA (that’s the group and list from the Dean campaign that we women helped start and grow). They are Alternet, Progressive Democrats of America, democrats.com, Kucinich lovers and all the other groups that take women's money, say they’ll do feminist and women’s rights issues one of these days, and conveniently forget to mention women and children when they talk about poverty or human needs or America’s future or whatever.

This latest move by Kennedy, is so telling about the status of and respect for women’s rights, women’s voices, women’s equality, women’s authority and our ability – indeed, our obligation - to promote and earn and deserve and elect, unabashedly, a President that is the first woman after centuries of men who “know what’s best for us.”

just because he endorsed Obama. Would Ted Kennedy have been a racist if he endorsed Clinton. Now, I really can't imagine why she is against Caroline Kennedy!

14. Oh, and that's the nice version that was posted.
The non-nice version compares the Kennedy-Obama endorsement to gang rape. No, I'm NOT joking.

10. maybe the pushback is coming from people who think
that a last name is not a qualifier for political office?

Could it be as simple as that?
