The Sarcasm Smiley looks like this: :sarcasm:

It is used to reflect sarcasm. Meriam-Webster defines sarcasm as:

1: a sharp and often satirical or ironic utterance designed to cut or give pain

2 a: a mode of satirical wit depending for its effect on bitter, caustic, and often ironic language that is usually directed against an individual b: the use or language of sarcasm

An example would be

Oh joy! John McCain just got elected to the White House. I am happy now. :sarcasm:

This would mean not that the poster is happy McCain won, but that they weren't happy, and were expressing the exact opposite.

I've seen enough of your posts to know you're not dumb. But not everyone's like you, and those unlike your are not necessarily dumb. Not everyone knows how to deal with a four-way stop or a traffic circle, for example. So use the sarcasm tag to protect yourself from collisions with those who don't necessarily know how to navigate (or discern) sarcasm. Safe travels!

Because the sarcasm-operator incorporates both semantic and pragmatic elements (the latter to a higher degree than with the other typical logical vocabulary).

But as far as just the semantic content of the operator is concerned, yah, it can be considered to be a type of negation.

I've been using the tag for quite a while now. Especially when dealing with the antics of members of a certain political party or idiots in general. I even have it set up on my quick links bar so I can copy the link to the location where I keep a copy of the tag.
