New gun law goes into effect
New gun law goes into effect

City awaits challenge

In deciding not to sign or veto Pittsburgh City Council’s lost and stolen gun legislation, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl has allowed the measure to be law. As such, residents who fail to report a lost or stolen gun within 48 hours are now subject to fines of up to $500 for the first offense and $1,000 or 90 days in jail for subsequent offenses.

Although municipalities across the state have passed or are considering such legislation, including Philadelphia, York, Easton, Lancaster and Allentown—which passed an ordinance earlier this month—no such laws are likely to be enforced because gun legislation is reserved for the state legislature. Philadelphia’s law is being challenged in court.

City Councilman Rev. Rickey Burgess, who cast the only vote against the measure because he believed it unconstitutional, now says it should be enforced immediately.

1. With all due respect to Opie and Picksburgh, I'm not sure how this could be enforced, at all
If someone steels (ha ha--get it? Pittburgh!) my gun and I don't notice it for, say, three months, what can possibly be done to me if that gun hasn't been used in a crime in the meantime?

2. what an interesting law...
the only person who would know if a gun was stolen would be the owner of the gun. and unless the gun owner checks his arsenal every two days...

unlike what many here think, we don't take them out each day and fondle them while masturbating. i haven't checked on the presence of my dewalt 18v drill in some months either.

what is the point of this law?

8. The funniest thing I've read all day.
Sitting around in this big old house, alone, for the first time in ages (everyone else has headed East).

Laughing out loud, with no one to hear or ask why.

I need another drink.

3. I don't get it.
The way I see it, the people who wouldn't report a theft are, more than likely, those who aren't supposed to possess firearms.

Therefore, wouldn't the guns be unregistered and, therefore, not traceable back to those who didn't report the theft?

Maybe I'm missing something, here.

I hope things are looking better for you, Friend.
